I maintain software for a living, troubleshooting is a strange field. I always look for ways for things to go wrong, but not cause I'm a negative guy; in fact the harder it is to think up things that could go wrong, the better.

That's just how you think when your job is to look a program, and be told the software is doing something impossible. then you start considering what has to go wrong, in order to make that particular type of impossible thing happen.

eventually, you find out where the assumption is wrong, the software is in fact doing what it's been told. but we didn't tell it what we thought we were telling it to do. Although, I *have* seen the computer do the impossible when nothing was wrong with the software. (tuns out the hardware was broken so it was acting flaky even though the program itself was ok)

I think they should teach Sherlock Holmes in computer science classes, to get programmers used to how to debug. =) half joking, half serious...
