This game is *very* good. Like all city and civ builders, I don't think I'm very good at it, but I'm slowly learning and I love every run. This game really leans into the rogue-like / run-based nature and it's such a breath of fresh air. If you fail, it's over quickly and you start again. If you're successful, the game never grows wobbly or out of hand. Late game Civ (and others) can really grind to a halt as you slowly fix every single city and every single unit. Not here, Against the Storm remains pretty tight, then it's over. Win or fail, you gain experience and complete Deeds that allow you to build out a tech tree that slowly improves your capabilities. Each run gives you a (growing) suite of perks and buildings and species that alter your strategy and may lead to a great setup, or a crappy run. There's the meta progression of having multiple successful runs in a cycle to complete the seals. I love this game...really really great stuff. I've played on both my Steam Deck and PC and it's a fantastic experience on both.

I love this game. I've played a handful of survival and crafting games now and there is something about Core Keeper that just makes it a favorite, if not the best. It is intuitive, but has a pleasing level of mystery and opaqueness. It is charming and simple, but full of depth. I keep stumbling across things, then realize there is something cool I can do with it. I love the steady drop of new equipment and items. I just love playing this.

Runs perfectly well on Steam Deck. I've only played in solo and it is a great time. It would be fun with friends, of course, but none of mine are playing and it is still a great time.

I know this is going against the grain some. A lot of this game is very good. Visually very appealing. Very good controls (I played on the Steam Deck and had zero issues). Really distinct characters with unique mechanisms, nifty new twists in levels (I liked the disappearing snow footprints), and the combinations of the characters really changes how you play. I also liked the Shadow mode that lets you create a simultaneous string of actions to pull off big moves, though I am not sure I truly "got it" and ever truly took advantage of it.

But, the game starts to get really hard. I lost interest after I finished Mission 5 (assassinating Yobu at his castle). The level was so tightly patrolled that it felt like a very tedious, trial and error slog of slowly peeling back and onion to do anything. I spent 30 minutes after I finally assassinated the target just trying to sneak my characters out to the escape point as they added even more guards and patrols. When the game focused on cool powers and figuring out the fun way to do something? I enjoyed it. I liked the experiment. But, by level 5 it just went from "neat puzzle sandbox" to "tedious puzzle" and I put it down after completing the level.

I think the true way they want you to play this is going through the game to learn the levels and the mechanisms. Then, go BACK through to pull off more challenging requirements, or do it without killing or being seen. That all seems fun if you have infinite time and really want to invest. But, I wish the game's approach to difficulty went a different path and not just "infinite guards." It's very cheap, so I definitely got my money's worth the for the 7 hours I played. Still, if asked, I wouldn't recommend it. Not my favorite stealth game.

This game rules. I don't know how many hours I'll put into it, but I know I'm not uninstalling it. It's just sorta a perfect video game. The racing feels good - a little more involved than a typical arcade, but by no means a simulation. There is so much content and the game rewards you for everything. I grabbed this on sale recently and it's just such a great game. Plays very well on the Steam Deck.

Very neat game. Very weird, interesting, unique story. Lots of twists and turns. It reminded me somewhat of a Jeff VanderMeer book. If you enjoy "walking simulators" and interactive science fiction, and don't mind things getting a bit strange, definitely check this out. I enjoyed it.

I have several critiques, but this is a good game. I do not think the developers really nailed the thrill and excitement of flying a starfighter. It doesn't feel dynamic, but, sorta like a weird FPS in 3D. That's maybe something I want more than what the developer claimed.

But, it controls well and looks good. Dogfights are fun, especially when you begin to experiment with guns, missiles, and special abilities. I like the little custom environmental puzzles. Dogfights are quick and punchy. Nothing seems to drag on and they don't seem to have bullet sponges.

I think the story and dialogue is terrible - it's just bad and they could have done less if it's going to be this low quality. Overall I'm having a lot of fun booting this up on the STeam Deck after the kids go to bed. Is pretty friendly on the battery, controls, and looks great. I will definitely be finishing the campaign.

I really appreciate the style and premise of this game. But, I don't think it's terribly fun to play. The gist is that you're a low-level bureaucrat working in a DMV-like office for an autocratic state (think North Korea). Part of the game is performing a Papers, Please like game of manning a booth to issue paperwork to folks. But, it isn't as interesting or clever and often feels arbitrary. Which is a big critique of the overall game. When not in the booth, you're trying to uncover details of a personal mystery while engaging in office backstabbing and taking on tasks for others. But, the game punishes you heavily for exploring its opportunities. For example, I had sex with a co-worker hoping that would help me advance another quest (it didn't). This then lead to a medical bill and punishment from work for a sum of around $1300, which I had to pay in two days. This seemed impossible and...I failed the game. Such stark and punitive measures that then cause me to fail the game and start over after several hours? That isn't fun. Why give me the sandbox if I'm not allowed to play? Perhaps I'm supposed to tinker and replay the game over and over to figure it out, but man, it just wasn't that fun.

I'm really enjoying this interactive narrative game. It is mostly dialogue and story, but the few interactive moments really pack a punch with tough moral choices. This game takes the city and setting of Blade Runner and fuses it with the "Humans as batteries" elements of The Matrix. There is some truly dystopic stuff with conspiracy and subplots. Driving this through the notion of an office drama, with rivalries and friendships, really works. This has been a really surprising play.

Note that I'm playing on the Steam Deck and it seems to work perfectly.

I'm in the middle of Act II after about ten hours. I'm not sure I can recommend this game for a few reasons. Firstly, the story isn't terribly interesting, it isn't well told (bad voice acting, annoying dialogue), I don't really care about any of the characters, and there are just too many proper nouns (Thaumaturge, Salutor, etc). It's based in an interesting time period - 1905 Poland - but I'm not sure they do much with it. It seems like a pretty typical city with seedy elements, corrupt officials...it could be turn of the century New York. The combat is somewhat interesting, but it never evolves, either through enemy types, mechanisms, or interesting powers for the player that vary choices. The game also struggles with communicating game state (who has a debuff, how that matters), which is somewhat grating as the difficulty increases. Finally, the detective element is just roaming around a room or environment and clicking on every glowing spot. It's tedious and there is a lot of text that is too vague to be useful, but not clever enough to be engaging.

This has been a very interesting experience. Mass Effect 1 is still incredibly bad. I felt this way in 2007 and playing the remaster in 2024 has only sharpened this critique. Every part of it - other than the worldbuilding - is a miss. Combat doesn't work, there is zero character development, the RPG part is a non-entity, the Mako is bad, and major plot points aren't even really incorporated. But, if you focus on main content, it's a breezy 10 hours or so.

Then and now, it is crazy how much better a game Mass Effect 2 is. It's like they finally delivered the game they intended. I haven't finished it yet, but I will, and quickly as I am struggling to put it down. It doesn't feel like a dated experience at all. Plus, with all the DLC incorporated from the start, there are a lot of characters and experiences I missed the first time. Combat is tight and fun. Spells are more useful and interesting. The scanning mini-game is addictive and relaxing. Characters, with their loyalty missions, are much more interesting.

I never actually played Mass Effect 3 - I was taking a break from video games and its original release had so much baggage. But, with 2 being so fun, I cannot wait to finally dive in.

Note: Review written after Mass Effect 1 and most of Mass Effect 2.
