I bought this the first week it came out if I recall correctly. I was 100% ready to return it because of how bad most reboots are. Within 15 minutes I was completely sold. The intro was awesome, coming up the elevator with the theme music pumping while you literally pump the shotgun and step out into the UAC base... golden.

It goes on sale ridiculously cheap so often. I've seen it for about 5 bucks. If you haven't played it and you don't get it at that price you're a damn fool.

AI war is about real life intelligent AI. I don't mean that in a game sense. I mean that the AI can actually challenge you (a human) and surprise you. It's not an exaggeration... it will consistently surprise you and adapt to you.

For a small studio these guy(s) do strategy right. The studio itself has dropped down to one developer who is brutally honest and open with his community (even about personal things) but there is a small army of volunteer devs and a lot of work was done by dedicated devs who were with the studio before money got tight.

AI war 1 had ruthlessly efficient AI but the interface, depth, and sheer possibilities led to it being kind of exploity and cheese prone sometimes and the amount you had to micromanage things was inordinate. All of that seems fixed this time and it came a long way from even early early access... it's much more streamlined now.

If you can handle depth (and you will have to if you want to beat higher difficulty levels of AI) and can adapt to a rapidly changing strategic environment then this is an excellent game to check out. It will develop your strategic skills... and there is actually room for tactical maneuvers in fleet fights. It's not trivial either, a good grasp of strategy AND tactics is necessary to be optimal.

Overall I recommend for people who have the patience to learn a deep game... if you like flight sims or if you play hardcore strategy games for example. There's also a lot of room for people who play more APM RTS games, if you are good with micro you can get out of a lot of situations you wouldn't be able to otherwise (you'll still need middling strategic skills though for sure). Very versatile game.

Deep and interesting rogue-like that is still getting huge updates. Pretty sure it's made by one dude who is super engaged with the community and I think is probably some kind of crazy genius.

I've played literally almost every rogue-like in existence. This one is definitely worth the money.

EDIT 2022:

Game has not stopped receiving massive amounts of support and huge updates. It's bigger and better than it ever was and the direction and theme are still locked in and great. Can't recommend enough if you like old-school style true rogue-likes.

First things first: Eugen have treated their developers horribly (look up their labor disputes) and have proven themselves to be generally untrustworthy. The mods and devs that are left still have the same pompous attitude (which really really isn't doing them any favors). They also decided to throw in the scummy practice of having 2 divisions only available if you pre-order the game. There is no longer a way to obtain those divisions... it was a cheap cash grab and rubs me the wrong way. I don't mind exclusive cosmetics but if there are units that are plain unobtainable in any way then it really throws off the sense of fair games, regardless of whether it has an impact or not. For what it's worth I think they do have an impact and having the units just be straight up unobtainable is a huge negative. Luckily I own SD'44 (a mistake) so I got the 8 divisions from the "back to war pack" for free. However, if you don't have SD'44 you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Prepare to pay an extra 25 bucks for meta divisions from SD'44 on top of the base game just to be competitive.

Unfortunately they went even more towards the "spammy epic" playstyle. There's very little emphasis on preservation of units this time around, instead it's common to send them in as waves as the phases come up. Individual units matter much less, the income is much faster, there's way more units in general, and suppression is really all that matters. It's almost a mix between strategy and tactics now during the battles when before they were much more tactical. As a result positioning matters much less (though it does still come into play). I'm still not a huge fan of some of the wonky aspects of the morale system either, I don't like penetration or crit chances changing based on the morale of the unit. There's other times where it seems completely off as well... too many times.

I find it to be generally a much faster style that doesn't translate to much faster battles. Part of the reason I fell off WG RD near the end was I found it to be encouraging spam with their balance changes. SD44 took it farther with the spam and SD2 takes it to the extreme. I also don't like that they took out the destruction game mode. I have over 500 hours OF ACTUAL PLAY TIME in the WG franchise and only 16 in SD '44 and the reasons remain in SD2.

I'm refunding this for now and maybe getting it on sale later... but probably not. I don't like the direction this company is going, I generally don't like the remaining developers' attitudes, I don't like the DLC practices, I don't like their labor dispute or the way that are handling it, and the community is still as terrible as ever albeit much smaller. Not to mention the fact that they had to delay the game for months because they were too busy firing people 5 days before xmas for daring to stand up for themselves. The studio is a shell of it's former self at about 25% of it's peak employment and IT DOES SHOW.

Eugen.... what the f happened?

I'll be following the open source initiative called "project field warning"... it looks promising and with the open source engine lends itself to many different settings. All I know is I miss the glory days of WG where points and units mattered and tactics were much more pronounced over spam. Yes it was way slower... yes you could ♥♥♥♥ up royally and lose all your units in a second... and I liked it like that and apparently so did others because it doesn't look like this game is doing it for people.

I loved the first one but had my doubts about it's transition into 3 dimensions. They did a great job though and I'm excited to see the game develop more.

This game deserves a way better rating than what it has right now. This is one of the best metroidvanias that has come out in a long time. I find it much better than guacamelee and other similarly priced titles. They could have totally got away with charging about 10 dollars more on the regular price and I wouldn't complain. I got it on sale for like 8 bucks and that has to be one of the best gaming deals I've ever got.

The handrawn art is gorgeous. The atmosphere reminds me of when I was first discovering the lore of the actual metroid games. The sounds and music are superb. The atmosphere reminds me of when I was first playing the legit original metroid games, it's got depth and room to grow.

I reeally hope that this gets more popular and that they expand on the excellent base they have here. I think I'm about 1/3 of the way through with the game and I'm enjoying the ♥♥♥♥ out of it.

Difficulty level might be high for plebes. Controller basically required. Be warned.

player unknown's completely unreliable rubber band lagfest.

EDIT 4/16:
Still has unacceptable lag but it is getting SLIGHTLY better. Cheaters on the moderate side but still problematic... 1% chance of a cheater means 1 ruining every game. Audio bug where the sounds are reversed through your headphones is literally game-breaking. No new guns, no mechanics updates, no ballistics tuining as of now. Looking more like a quick cash-grab but there's still time for dev. We'll see.

EDIT: Put more time into the game (about 10 hours, don't know why steam doesn't show it). It's still one of the worst piles of ♥♥♥♥ I've ever seen. This is a half baked mod at best. Go get arma 3 if you think you can handle a realistic shooter at all or know anything about weaponry or have ever held a gun in your pre-pubescent hands. Sorry, just calling it like I see it. 10-20 feet does not display any difference in "guns", this is one of the stupidest "realistic" ploys I've ever seen.*end edit.

I play lots of mil-sim and arcade shooters, both have their charms. When I heard that this was a mix between Red Orchestra and some bouncier games like CS I decided to give it a shot.

I do not recommend the game however, to me it seems like a CS reboot despite all the people claiming it's not. It could just be the fact that it's the source engine... but movemement is unrealistic, guns do not handle accurately at all, and there are some weird design choices. Specific categories follow:

"Realism"
I was talking to fellow shooter in game and we were discussing the bullet impact effects and recoil; when a bullet impacts a surface a very big cloud of dust comes up. Unfortunately it does not mar the surface with a bullethole so you can tell where the shots are coming from. Instead you just get a dust cloud magically appearing somewhere (a good foot off the wall mind you) without any indication of where that bullet came from. The dust could be coming from the ground, from the wall to your right, from the ceiling above your head. Trust me, 7.62, 5.56, 9mm, these rounds do not kick up a huge ass cloud of dust, even if you hit something very dusty. It's a little weird and for me it makes the game more unenjoyable. Movement is also one of the craziest things I've ever seen. I know of no human or animal that moves in any way similiarly to these characters.

Maps.
Maps are not nearly as big as I thought and they share the typical cramped CS style. I didn't expect Arma or Delta Force (joint ops or whatever) style maps but I certainly expected something bigger than de_dust from the reviews. Unfortunately I see the maps to be about 25%-33% bigger than counterstrike maps at best and they share the same cramped hallway/funnel feel. Expect there to be the same chokepoint nade spamming. Trust me, I've done it in my short time and it works, it's a thing.

Weapons:
The amount of weapons you can choose is relatively small and again is similar in quantity and feel to CS weapons. I saw no unique "loadout subclass" configurations. Whoever is writing that in reviews never played a game with an actual wide variety of weaponry to choose from and the ranges where those weapons could display their differences. This is very much spray and pray sometimes, and even when it's not you're very much encouraged to spam shots because of janky hitboxes and very very poor location optimization. I often killed players with a ping of 30 when I had a ping of 30 by shooting at the area they were previously in about 2 seconds ago. Not sure why, but it happens.

All in all is it slightly different than CS? Yes it is. Should you expect anything different from it? No, it uses the source engine: movement, unrealisitic gun handling, and weird location/combat scenarios are very similar to what you're used to in CS. Graphics are better, gunplay is not and I'd say net optimization is worse as well.

Hope this helps!

This game right now is imbalanced, broken, buggy and kind of a ♥♥♥♥ show. It pains me to say it because I genuinely love this game and it's predecessors, but I would not recommend buying it.

There's several reasons and I will bullet point them (feel free to convo me for a more thorough analysis)
1: Community: the general chat is some of the worst people you will ever talk to in life. (yes it's really that bad, think nazi apologists, excessive trolls, people with 0 games who sit in the chat all day deterring newcomers)
2: Community (dev/"marshall" perspective) the devs and their chosen few (Marshalls), ignore reasonable player input in terms of balance, ridicule people who disagree with them openly, and generally break the game every time they get a chance to suit their view. Sure, they're the devs, they can do whatever they want. Does this make the game better? No.
3: Balance: This game is terribly imbalanced and despite many many user threads detailing very reasonable steps to start the balancing process it has remained so. As a amatter of fact they continue to introduce half baked mechanics that break the game further such as "stealth infantry" who were bugged and invisible for weeks.
4: playerbase: This game is rapidly dying. A few weeks ago there would be about 900 people on during a weeknight. This week it has fallen to about 600, and it's been decreasing prior to a few weeks ago. The chat trolls and high learning curve don't help. Neither does the pompous attitudes of the devs and players.
5: Naval: it's broken, it sucks, and no one uses it. They should have just patched ALB (the previous game) and stayed away from naval entirely. There's about 15 ships for each side, and none of them balance at all with the rest of the game. It's literally a folly.

I actually have a guide on this game where I go through a few play throughs. I won't be wasting my time on it anymore because basically this game is done. It's a real shame because it used to be my go-to and really did scratch that tactical/strategic itch. Now it's more just a spam/click fest with very little tactical thikning or strategy involved. Basically you spam OP units or planes or artillery. I know that sounds trite, but that's what's it's moved to. It used to be a game based on positioning and tactical movment of limited forces. Now it's more of an APM/creep game.
