I'm writing this review out of the perspective of a PVE player.
The game is great. Any game I spend 379 hours in is great. The early and mid experience is very good and filled with a good mix of survival and story. The building system is good, not great, but good.
The problems start once you reach the deep desert. As a PVE player, you are forced to go into the PVP to progress. Funcom said they have listened to feedback and in a way they did, but nor really. The DD (deep desert) map has increased the PVE zone to half the map instead of the small part at the base of the map (a-row), however, there is NOTHING to do in the PVE zone. They increased the zone but moved everything worth getting into the PVP top half of the map. Effectively making the PVP zone smaller, which makes it easier for PVP:ers to find prey. No one, and I mean no one, in their right mind would think its an enjoyable time to jump between "islands" in the PVE zone to hunt the 1 or 2 nodes of stravidium or titanium that might be hiding there (most of the time its blocked by some player who walled it in so only they can get it). Want to farm spice? you know, the thing that all end game content requires? Have fun roaming the PVE to find ♥♥♥♥♥♥ small sized spice blows that net you ♥♥♥♥ all of spice. Want the end game unique blueprints? ♥♥♥♥ you, go to the PVP zone and get harassed by players who love to roam in groups of 4, picking off solo players and griefing you to the max.
Now, in before all the griefers and PVP:ers say "thats the game!" well, for you it is, not for me. I do not enjoy ruining other peoples nights and progress. I do not like to purposefully destroy other peoples things and set them back days or even weeks of progress. Do I venture into the PVP? yes, but only because I have been left no other choice. Do I often get griefed? not really, I've learned how to get away and play it safe. Do I enjoy it? nope. Funcom, for the love of god, either make PVE servers or allow filthy spice hippies like me a chance to farm in peace in the PVE zone, you know, with actual things to farm.
TLDR: hate the game, love the game. Looking forward to how it will develop. Would buy again.

I bought the game even though I had read some less than stellar reviews and I am glad I did!

The biggest gripe I read from other reviews is that you cant individually control your party members and this is true. And at times its frustrating. You are preparing your squad for a coming event, perhaps a load of drones that will soon spawn, or worse, a special xeno is about to come tumbling down on you but you cant get your squad to split up and cover all the bases! This has lead to my entire squad being thrown on their asses by a charge which could have easily been avoided if you could split up your squad.

But! If you are aware of this flaw, and take it into account, the game is very fun! It does a very good job of building the tense Alien-atmosphere. The game has several mechanics in place to get you to fear the aliens. If you always seek confrontation, the aliens will become stronger, sending more and stronger opponents your way. Which means the game is trying to get you to hide from the Aliens, This in turn helps build tension as you hide in rooms, listening to the beep of the motion detector intensifying, knowing that if the alien takes the wrong turn, all hell will break loose.

Some mechanics are not my cup of tea, like the "death timer" mechanic of the world, where the infestation level of the planet rises over time, increasing difficulty and maybe game over? (Haven't played long enough to find out). But just cause its not my cup of tea, I can see that it might be something others enjoy, and thematically the mechanic fits and adds even more of that pressure you're supposed to feel.

Overall its a great game that does the Alien-franchise justice. Before playing this I didn't know that strategy games can be scary.
