A great indie metroidvania with a slick combo system, an engaging storyline, and 4 different characters to experience the events of the game through. Revisiting the game after several years, and it still holds up fantastically.

This game is simply amazing--if you are at all a fan of the Metroidvania genre, it is well worth the price for the enjoyment you'll get out of it.

Aside from the bullet-hell-meets-metroidvania goodness it injects directly into your optic nerve, it also has a couple nice mechanical fluorishes/innovations to go along with a complete suite of soul-crushing difficulty options.

One is the "Would you like help?" prompt that shows up after you've died and continued in the same place 3 or so times. So far, I've been too stubbornly prideful to accept this, and it's my understanding that this feature is disabled on the higher difficulties (but hey, you made your bed if you're playing the advanced difficulties in the first place), but it's nice to know that the lifeline is there if I wanted to grab it.

The other thing is the money. I know, it's kind of a weird thing to comment on, but bear with me. In most games, past a certain point, money basically becomes meaningless. The shop in this game has a limited stock of stat and mechanic-boosting items, and you can only carry a couple copies of each of the consumables, so you'd think it would fall into the same category. However, defeated boss characters that move into town will offer 5-minute temporary buffs in exchange for cash (and the timer doesn't count down while you're in town, which is a nice touch). Combined with a fairly thorough fast-travel network, that's long enough to last you to and through many boss encounters, so there's always at least some use for the stacks of cash you accrue late-game.

The game is also a fair shake longer than I expected, and integrated speed run and boss rush modes ensure that there'll be enough to keep me coming back even once I finish smashing my face against the wall that is the final boss.

Highly recommended.
