A short 3D platformer with varied game play elements and a "discovery style story". About 2-3 hours of game time, without a great deal of replay value . Would definitely recommend if you can pick it up for under $10.

Star Control: Origins. It's a Star Control game. It's got the arcade like action, humorous dialog, and epic quest-line you'd expect, and as such I'd say it's a worthy successor--or at least a modern update of a classic game. If you don't know what to expect, just watch a few videos--that pretty much sums up the "talk to alien" -> "go do a quest" -> "arcade combat" -> "talk to alien" cycle you'll be experiencing.

I only ran into one bug--I'm almost certain I did some quest out of the expected/tested order and I ended up with an "over mind" virus that couldn't be uninstalled. An annoyance, but by no means a game breaking one.

My play through took about 24 hours, following the main quest and doing enough resource mining to be able to progress. If you enjoy exploring and resource mining, there certainly is at least another 10 hours of content beyond my experience.

Recommended with rating of 3/4 stars at it's retail price point.

NOTE: There appears to be some kind of ongoing dispute regarding licenses or copyrights with this game. My advice is snatch it up in case it disappears, i.e. don't let that put you off from enjoying the game.

This is a review of the Dying Light single player campaign. I purchased the game with the DLC content, so my experience reflects that view. This is not a review of Multi-Player/Adversary (play as the infected) gameplay.

The game is at its heart a console based, checkpoint saving, QT event dominating, button masher with a storyline tacked on that is told in (very little) part through quests, but is mostly narrated directly by QuickTime events (in game video). The first third of the game and story play fairly well, although the gameplay elements are often annoying: e.g. weapons degrade very quickly (a metal weapon becomes useless when hitting fleshy zombies? Really? Yes really.)

After the first third, both the gameplay and storyline quickly approach intolerable. The gameplay progresses and the need to use many of the combo moves increases, which generally meant that I died—a lot. Fortunately death has few consequences, and I grew to accept it as part of the gameplay, albeit an annoying one. QT events start to dominate, with both the "hero" and main villain pontificating pointlessly, and many of the other side characters making what can only be called extremely stupid decisions for the sake of a story that has collapsed under its own desire to be clever.

The tipping point for me to give it a thumbs down occurs about half way through (or a bit past), when you lose some abilities “because you’re tired”, lose your weapons and a companion during a pointless QTE, and the antagonist MOCKS you for “being a puppet and not being able to make decisions”—YES—to extremely crappy game design. I’ve got news for you—I can always decide I don’t want to play, and to write a review—done.

Generally: not recommended due to poor storyline, obnoxious QTEs, annoying and unnecessary gameplay elements, and excessive DLC. If you buy this, be sure to purchase at a steep discount.

I really don't know what to say about this game. It's both horrible and hilarious. Hopelessly derivative and completely original. In short, it's a game that looks a good deal like things you might have played before, and yet at no point takes itself seriously by presenting new elements that are essentially completely ridiculous. I recommend it for anyone that likes "open world" action games.

This is my first experience with a "Saints" title, so I missed alot of the (fairly obvious) references to previous titles, but that doesn't detract much from the game at all. Gameplay starts out similar to a Grand Theft Auto title (or perhaps previous Saints titles?) and quickly takes a right turn into some odd breed of superhero game crossed with a "game in the hood"...and then the Earth blows up.

In short, the humor alone is likely worth the play, and if you're a fan of this type of game, it's a must play.

Batman: Telltale takes the tried and true Telltale "choose your own adventure" formula into the DC universe with their most popular property: Batman.

The standard telltale formula works well here, very well. For the most part the execution is very forgiving in terms of timing for reactive events, with a few exceptions. Some people have had issues with the graphics engine, although I had none (nvidia 860M).

The storyline is the high point of the game, with appearances from a number of well known DCU characters, although the core story takes a well revered character and drags them through the mud in order to push forward the narative. The plot suffers at times with a few rediculous turns that have to be overlooked.

Overall I'd give this a 4/5, very good, and well worth the purchase, esp. when it's on sale.

For anyone that's (still) waiting on a Half-Life 2 sequel, this will give you a nice taste of HL2 but leave you wanting more. Definitely recommended, esp. for HL fans.

Tomb Raider takes up the Lara Croft story as a prequel, with the series typical 3rd person action platformer perspective, but with the addition of an evolving storyline. It's somewhat of a button masher (i.e. designed for consoles) but plays fairly well on the PC.

The most annoying issues are the transitions between cutscene and action scene, which at times can lead to a quick death if you're not expecting it. Most of the puzzles are simple physics puzzles and difficulties typically lie on not being fully aware of the surroundings (i.e. missing a ledge, climbable rock, etc.)

It took me about 14 hours to play through the game, and complete "76%" of the content (per the game guide). I'd recommend it to anyone that likes story based platformers, and certainly to anyone that's a tomb raider fan.

I feel like this game is some other alien invasion game that was given a thourough "Duke Nukem" make over, and not a Duke Nukem game at all. It has a number of good "duke-isms" and one liners, including many we've heard before, but the game play elements are just dumb...

2 guns? Really? Am I stuck in some derivative COD?
Duke Vision? Come on, if I wanted to play Doom 3, I'd play that!
Puzzles that don't involve blowing stuff up? What is this, Half Life 2?
Wall boobs? It can't be true (it is).

It's like a cross section of all of the shooters of the previous 10 years (from 2000-2010) with nothing done particularly well (or poorly), but with none of the run-and-gun-blow-em-up action that defined the Duke genre. For die-hard Duke fans, there might be enough here to give it a look, but otherwise it's better avoided.

I'm generally a fan of this genre of game, notionally the "privateer" style game where there is space based action/combat along with RPG elements. I played about 18+ hours prior to this review.

This game contains a bit more of the RPG than some, but it's presentation is extremely basic...a dialog screen that list who at a given location you may talk to. Interaction is fairly straightforward after that.

There exists a very large skill web to populate, but not a great deal of content to use to level up...so its the same 4-5 quests (kill the pirate, get some ore, deliver a message, rescue some stranded civies, or buy and deliver some goods) over and over, or mining ore for cash and xp. The music is repetitive, the AI voice (computer on your ship) becomes anoying fairly quickly, and the main quest requires digging through a good bit of text (repeated by a large number of "characters") to comprehend and follow. There are a number of factions, and I've focused on one thus far (order).

The route planning is attrocious, and given the dependance on autopiloting built into the game, the route planner has gotten me killed MANY times, mostly due to the fact it can't seem to go around an asteroid, so that the most boring parts of the game require your attention. Ultimately, this along with the repetitive nature of the other elements makes this a "not recommended" game.

If you're looking for a similar game, done much better, go play Rebel Galaxy.

There looks to be some good to this title (my thumbs down is for the single player campaign), but it's few and far between. The story, what there is, is about as trite and/or derivative as it's possible to be. The action is decent, but not great, and the AI is schizo--cover is used either too much or not enough, and enemy AI almost always sees you regardless of cover. The opportunity to control multiple unique perspectives is a plus (dog, drones, various soldiers, heli's, etc.) and the game mechanic that flips you between them can at times be fun, but that's really all there is here.

I assume the MP is the highlight of the game, at least, I'm hoping it's better than the campaign.
