Back in the early 2000s, Nintendo released broadband and modem adapters for the GameCube which allows players to play certain GameCube games via LAN or online. Unfortunately, plans changed when there's an exploit in the GameCube version of Phantasy Star Online that allows pirated games to be played. That's what I believe lead to Nintendo being reluctant to implement online multiplayer into the GameCube.
