So once upon a time, not to long ago, there was a game invented..

It made people face each other on a battle ground which let each player control certain soldiers to infiltrate the enemies ground and take down the most important piece which kept the other team running. That game was called chess.. but if you were born 14 years ago or later, that game for you is most likely League of Legends or Dota2.

People have traded in their turn based strategy for something that runs real time with heros that move in an environment that actually changes the way people play. Valve has takin the classic masterpiece that was Defense of the Ancients and made it highly polished and extremely assessable for everyday audiences.. But this begs the question, is this game for the "everyday videogame player"?

Here is where things get complicated. When you first pick up Dota2 you will be hard pressed to understand whats happening on the battle field. With over 100 different hero to choose from everyone has unique abilities which make this game immensely unpredictable for early adopters. Who does what, at what times, in what situations can be amazingly influential in a game to go in your teams direction or the opposite teams.

Is Dota2 good? Yes. How good of a game is it? Extremely good. But this quality requires you to realize that it's only as good as the amount of time you invest into understanding the playing field. Luckily this seemingly endless complexity adds directly to the game play experience makeing it that more gratifying when you begin to see the pieces falling into place.

There are a few mishaps worth mentioning though. This game can be so involving that it can have a tendency to make invested players upset when they see misplays (player error). Dota2 has done the minimal amount to try to fix this "Gamer Rage" that is clearly apparent within the game design itself. Another thing worth mentioning is a obvious lack of surrender. Games that go one sided usually tend to stay that way and in turn forces the losing team to spiral deeper into a potentially abusive game that can last anywhere between 45 - 120min if the winning team wishes it.

So whats the final verdict?

Well, If you consider yourself a fan of deep involved gameplay experiences then you have no excuse not to play this Free to Play Valve remake. It could lend itself better towards the more positive experiences of good sportsmanship but in the end I can confidently say that this is one of the deepest and most rewarding team based games that has ever been created.
