It's not finished yet and it's GOTY short list.
Something I really like about spells. You have to intend them for their full cast time to work. If you cancel out of them, they don't go off but as soon as you're ready to give it another go, it's not on cooldown. So much better for strategic caster gameplay. The fact that you can cancel out of a cast and not lose significant ground is awesome. Another amazing thing is you can chain cast by holding the next cast in a sequence and it won't waste any frames.

It's very involved and satisfying.

It also plays great on Steam Deck. Visually, it works but it's limited. FSR works best but that will evolve with polish. Expect artifacts. However, playing it is a dream with only the occasional fr drop and that's what matters. It works better than I thought it would being EA. I like building with m/kb and playing with a controller. They are working on making the transition between control schemes seamless. Once that happens, inventory management and building will be awesome. The touch screen is very useful and I expect a solid experience on Deck in the near future. For now it's rough.

My biggest rub with this game is it's not a game. Its hardly a game.
Cinema is not game. Game is not cinema. You can intertwine the two. It's been done successfully for many years but you cannot make cinema a game or game cinema at the same time. The two mediums cannot coexist simultaneously as this "game" has tried to do.

Stop trying. You demean both mediums.

Otherwise the story and characters are good. Tragic and mostly respectable performances for the English audience. It's not a bad whole thing. It's actually pretty okay and I'm interested, but I wouldn't call it a game nor a participatory experience. It's a movie where you press some buttons.

It also lacks a lot of the experiential subtlety both games and cinema have. By combining the two artforms, you have either stripped any fun game aspect, or you didn't have the budget to make the game part with all the performances and exposition flying around. It reminds me of Matrix Revolutions in that it's too happy to overload your senses and leave you numb to the messages which seem to be less important to the "game".

You have to read the centralized tome that gets populated to really understand what's going on.
That's not artistic at all. That's poor design. Poor fundamentals.

It's missing the reason both mediums exist by trying to do both.

Completely deserved GOTY '22. I was suspicious of the open world and my mind was completely changed by around hour 10 - 15. After the warm-up, completely hooked. It really coalesces into the terror, sorrow, perseverance and triumph which work so well together. Mount layer combat is as superb as you would expect out of FromSoft.

What it does most beautifully is it only hints and does not tell you where to go unless you directly want it. There is no level scaling. You will explore things which will one-shot you or cripple you just by not recognizing it. That's okay. I wish more developers would let their players play the game to determine the difficulty rather than artificially moving levers. Elden Ring does this perfectly not because players demanded it. They made difficulty from easy to hard exactly up to the player.

I went from it's 8 o clock to it's midnight in a heartbeat.
Everything about it is so jank and perfect. It's hard to believe this is early access.
My face literally hurts from the terror and laughing.
It lends itself to simplicity and therefore enjoyment. Echoes of Minecraft. I had literally no idea what I was doing hosting a crew. We learned so much along the way while busting our sides when we all screamed and jeered of our success.
Play the game with friends. It's way too good.

I'll have to revise this after completing the game but this is what turn based JRPGs are all about. More complex than a typical early Final Fantasy but not insane. There's a method to it and it's satisfying.
It's a little rough around the edges and sometimes confusing but it doesn't take long before you "get it".

Every character is awesome. Love them all. Their stories are sometimes cliche but all are good. How they intersect is meh or non-existent. It's more "I'm joining your party" and that's it. Otherwise it's just good solid writing and world building that gives them life and makes you care.

The only thing that stands out is that there is nothing exceptional going on anywhere. Everything is just good. I think its weakest aspects are the music and the way characters join your party. There is no classic JRPG track that I've found yet.

It's also surprisingly dark. Pretty damn dark. Lots of conflict going on and philosophical questions flying around right from the get go.

I play with Japanese voices and English text. They're very good. Haven't touched the English voices.

I wish there was a maybe. If you're expecting an RPG it's no more RPG than Half Life 2.
You mold your character but nothing else. That isn't to say it's a bad game, far from it.

That said, if you've played or heard stories about people who have roleplayed Cyberpunk 2020 and don't care about the forced narrative. It's pretty solid.

2.0 combat is actually silly amounts of fun once you learn all the cool things you can do and that's before enhancements, just pure mechanics. The Borderlands influence appears here which is kind of a ♥♥♥♥ move because Borderlands (any of them) is not particularly good. Gets old very quickly. People will argue there are takedowns and yadda. It's still borderlands gunplay.

I've only played for 8-9 hours *Edit: 80 Hours now*. The city and GTA elements are actually not as good as I expected but they are there and don't add to the plot at all unless you shoot people and get them angry. Or cut them down in plain sight. So yeah. The new police thing is irrelevant to RPG gameplay. That doesn't make it any less than fun as hell in NC which does indeed rock but is only GTA V in a smaller "open world" space. Civvies don't mean a damn.

Now that I'm thinking about it. 2.0 is only about quality of life and polishing simply from what is apparent. I can't think of any way to use heightened alert police to capture a criminal you've been tracking through the net. The game isn't sophisticated enough for that except but for produced instances which could be missed if you did it differently. Moral of the story here is outside scripted pieces, nothing but combat or stealth or access to get back door to do more combat or stealth really matters. In general NPCs are walking puppets with the brain of two cycles, okay that's enough.

I will change my mind as I play through but as a corpo monster who ate ♥♥♥♥ (literally everyone's start no matter the choice, a new life), if I don't get back to the top and start killing civilians in factories and murdering muppet shareholders outside of set pieces.... I'ma be pretty disappointed about the inflexibility of imagination. You don't create an antihero character only to liberate people from hyper-capitalism. That is complete dissonance when the whole aim of the character to dominate from a dark tower and the journey of sadism to get there and whether or not the world agrees is justified.

10/10 for sheer eye and ear candy. 7/10 for a set piece game. 3/10 for credible RPG along the lines of Skyrim which wasn't bad but it's not an RPG either. RPG implies freedom of impactful choice and that is sorely limited. Also you can't kill children. This is Cyberpunk. Children die. Not saying it's a good thing, it's just a fact.

Edit: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is so dumb at end game. It's not even logical. it is very much like Half Life 2 which is not an RPG. Sigh. Most everything else about it is great for a super linear story. It's totally awesome, endearing everything. Yeah there are avenues you can take but the tracks are the only road you get ultimately. Piss on people who advertise an RPG without freedom. It's not. Stop trying. I would rather watch someone else play the end game because nothing you choose really matters. Vibes of Mass Effect 3 when you get to the end. All of the in between is pretty satisfying save for a few (one or two) seriously annoying characters and quest lines. That has to be expected though. You don't like everyone in real life even though you have to tolerate them at some point or another. It's a truly wonderful experience once you realize you are on tracks and until you get to the end. Like playing a kick ass movie. You cannot play it entirely non-lethal. That is simply a choice you don't get to make.

Assetto Corsa Competizone is the new one.
This old one is still a balls solid sim without question terrifyingly accurate at high speed.
Get the new one.
It was never as much of a game as it is an experience.
Compare it to DCS's fighter planes more than anything else.

Hopelessly addicted. I can't believe I hadn't played this sooner. It's the epitome of "one more try" for hours and hours which disappear. I can see why this won a whole bunch of awards.

The only gripe I have is that when playing on Deck, suspend causes the audio to go way out of sync necessitating a game restart.

The only reason I love this game is from more than 10 years ago.
The game is completely dead. No servers are active that I can tell. DO NOT BUY IT unless you want to populate servers with a group of friends if that even still works.
That doesn't change how fun it was. Like Quake 3 Arena but with weird anime space ships.
