He told me there would be a chosen one.

"There will be ... a chosen one"

He told me of the significance.

"It will be ... significant."

Then he killed the dog.

- Do you like Lego Games?
- Do you like Open World Survival Craft?
- Do you hate not knowing what to do next?

Then open a guide, or prepare to wander aimlessly, as you explore a whole lot of nothing looking for a very little something to do.

This is the sort of Open World, not really Survival / No Crafting game that makes you ask yourself "Do I really like this kind of thing?"

Get ready to play a game made entirely out of Legos that plays the least like a Lego game.

1) The Story

You are an Astronaut, cruising through space, when your ship is hit and you crash on Pirate Island. The first thing you spot (read: forcibly directed to) just happens to be the MOST POWERFUL WEAPON in the WORLD (or worlds). It's ... the DISCOVERY TOOL! (What? Not impressed? Well, you should be.)

To repair your ship, you need Gold Bricks. You get them by helping the locals. After helping a few people, you are told there is nothing more to this world and you should leave. And thus, you leave the first of three tutorial levels.

You proceed to the second world where you find another item and do more tasks for the locals. You get more Gold Bricks and then go to the last world. You get the last items to fill your tool belt, enough Gold Bricks to make 10, and the ability to venture out on your own to locate more Gold Bricks.

You fly to randomly generated worlds, complete tasks, obtain items, complete quests, get more Gold Bricks. As you gather more bricks, you gain more tools and the ability to locate larger worlds. You can meet named characters and get longer quests to unlock in-game events. Meeting these characters is by random chance.

After you collect 100 Gold Bricks, you are told "You did it. You are now a Master Builder." You now have the ability to generate worlds with the lands you want to explore.

... And that's it. The "story" ends there. You can explore for more Gold Bricks or quests but, other than some minor things (Dragons), there is nothing else. There is no antagonist, no boss to defeat, no end game content. There is nothing else to do.

2) The Gameplay

In most Lego Games, your character has some sort of ability. The Astronaut has the ability to breath underwater. Your Discovery Tool allows you to "discover" more characters with other abilities. Unlike other games, there are few abilities to be found, and most characters have no abilities. Most abilities are useless, although some, like "Call a Horse" or "Change into a Bat" are useful, as traveling by foot is slow.

Vehicles aren't much better. They are faster (mostly), but they drive as well as a hard, plastic vehicle over bumpy plastic landscape would drive. There are also flying vehicles. They are ... better. The game spawns vehicles randomly. Sometimes you find a dozen vehicles while other times not see a single one.

The same goes for people. People are a source for quests and, likewise, Gold Bricks. Most people give items or Studs (currency). People show up anywhere, just wandering around. Some have tasks like "fetch an item" or "defeat an enemy". Others ask you to build something. Then there are a few that have a (sort of) Storyline Quest. Most reward you with hard-to-find items, Gold Bricks, or unlock in-game events (Dragons). Quests are unmarked, there are no hints they exist, and (worst of all) are not tracked in-game. If you forget what to do, or where to go, without notes (or a guide), you're out of luck.

Exploration can be fun. There are the things players look for, such as Towns, caves, Floating Castles. But the real meat of these games are the Dungeons, or it would be if it weren't a series of empty halls with a few traps sprinkled in. Sure, the dungeon does have treasure, as in 1 treasure. Yes, it is unique, and very powerful, but there are only 6 items in total and you often find repeats before new items.

The thing about (large) treasure chests is that they can reward you with different items but they can also give you the same item over and over again. And most items are useless. Some are used for quests. Most weapons are useless as well. You'll find one or two you like and forget the rest as they are all functionally the same. The only good ones have special properties. That usually means they are made from materials like Gold, Crystal, or Black. Certain enemies can only be harmed by these materials. The best material to use is Explosives, as all enemies are weak to it. As they say, "When in doubt, blow it up."

There are ranged weapons in the game but, as the game is not a shooter, they don't work well. The problem is in targeting. The game uses an auto aim feature that can target the wrong thing. Even in First Person mode, where you aim may not be where you shoot.

The Controls seem straight forward but can be too simple at times. Movement keys are normal but interactions are context sensitive. Attacking or using an item or vehicle are all assigned to the same button. Opening a menu requires holding a button while storing an item or taking it out requires pressing it. Multiple buttons have this same overlap. This can cause you to jump in a car, or from car to car, when you wanted to attack, or simply exit the vehicle.

Controller Support suffers the same problems. Lego games normally use a controller but the button mapping is just as bad here. The biggest problem is that you cannot reassign buttons. Being on a computer, this should have been an option.

Finally, Lego games should be known for their Building Mechanics. Unfortunately, it is not implemented well. First, you don't start with all of the elements. You have to find them first. Second, the game only uses vertical building, no side mounted bricks or other building techniques (SNoT). Finally, there really is no point to building your own creations as it is not one world but many, and if you are looking for Gold Bricks (or even more elements to use), you won't be on any one world for very long.

Ultimately, you will be left wanting as this is not a survival game. You respawn right where you were with little to no loss of studs or items. There is no crafting either, just find what you need. Exploration is lacking, caves are barren with maybe a treasure or two, and dungeons are not much better.

3) Goofs and Glitches

The First Goof is also the biggest goof. The Discovery Tool is vastly overpowered. You can delete almost anything in the game INCLUDING ENEMIES regardless of health or resistance.

The Second Goof applies to digging. All bricks are made of one material, Lego, which means you can dig through anything including The Dungeon Itself. Why risk the traps when you can just drill down to the treasure and skydive out?

The Third Goof is the SKYDIVE feature. It is supposed to get you out if you get stuck anywhere but you can use it at anytime as a travel ability, making all vehicles useless.

The Most Noticeable Glitch involves vehicles being LAUNCHED across the map. If a vehicle spawns on a hill or touching another object, it will be sent flying. It can also happen to you when you drive a vehicle.

Another Glitch is people spawning underground or on clouds. If they have a quest, you might not be able to complete it.

The Last Glitch is Crashing. It happens if there is too much destruction or the land doesn't load properly. IT WILL HAPPEN REGARDLESS of what CPU you have.

Conclusion

I debated getting this game. I never played MineCraft but I did like Terraria, and I was hoping this was a Lego game like that.

I was wrong.

Somehow, this felt like a worse version of the Lego Movie 2 game. This has NO story, vague directions, and an EVEN WORSE treasure and character system than LM2. Only a handful of characters even get a power. And there are NO RED BRICKS.

If you are looking at this game like I did, look elsewhere. While it has what it takes to make a good game, it fails to be one.

P.S. the building mechanic sucks
