It's hard in a way that I don't find to be fun. You might have a different experience. Bosses kill you in 3 hits, and take 50 - 100 hits to go down. This means you have to play more or less perfectly all the time.

The atmosphere and world are so compelling; i absolutely adore exploration in this game.

But the difficulty curve takes that lovely, contemplative experience, and turns it into something rage inducing for me.

A small team spent 7 years in isolation turning this game's skill curve into something they enjoy. If you're in the top 25% of players, skill wise, you'll probably like it. For everyone else, it's gonna be maddening.

UPDATE: ok, yeah, for my own sanity I'm not going any further with this game. Here's a little more detail:

PROS:
- evocative world design. The environment art, sound design, music, and character design again all conspire to create a wonderful, transporting world to explore
- exploration. finding little secret and hidden passages is so much fun. Entering a new environment is always magical.
- The did really try to make something new. And while I don't really like all the new, I do commend the ambition

CONS:
- The gameplay. Full stop. It's been tuned to be punishing as hell. The game requires you to play nearly perfectly to progress - near zero errors. It has been tuned so that it is very very hard to play perfectly. The punishment for making errors is massive. Playing this game feels like trying to list ever digit of pi while someone aims a shotgun at your leg.
- Starting in act 1, all bosses, environment hazards, and most regular enemies deal double damage. That means that 3 hits will kill you, even if you find the first health upgrade (you start with 5 masks)
- Base enemies in act 1 often have move sets more complicated than many bosses in HK.
- There are a ton of flying enemies, and they almost all input read to hover just out of reach.
- the economy is insane. Most enemies don't reward beads. You need beads to pay for not only all your upgrades, but every bench and fast travel station, even access to stores.


I could go on, but man. What a dissapointment.

This is the first modern adventure game I've played that really reminds me of old school Lucas Arts classics. It feels like it came out of a portal alongside the Dig and Full Throttle. Just fantastic.

This is the first time I've thought about a game while not playing it in a while.

It's a tightly crafted little fantasy RPG. Is it as wildly expansive as Skyrim or New Vegas? No. But it has fun little snaking paths through a unique world, good combat, and some intriguing mysteries.

It's got some fun immersive sim elements (relatively open level design, some fun systems that can interact, especially on the magic side of things).

EDIT: just want to say, I'm 10 hours in, and I just now walked into the first major city in the first map. I dunno, this game seems plenty big for me.

Love this game. Impeccable re-working of the original. Cyan still does the most internally coherent world building of any studio around.

Loved Dungeon of the Endless. Got this during the fall steam sale.

Really fun rogue like with tower defense elements. The gameplay and discovery are fantastic. Characters are super fun. The storytelling isn't on the level of Hades, but the world is worth your time!

EDIT: ok, months later, after a lot of patches and enhanced stability, I think I can finally recommend this game.

It is EXCEPTIONAL game design and storytelling. It's beyond anything else on the market. And now, finally, the stability matches the creative ambition.

Highly recommended.

EDIT: I continue to hold that this game is - as a game - incredible. But as a piece of technology, it is absolute garbage. I am crashing every five minutes trying to complete Act 3. it's awful. Absolutely awful.

This game is incredible. So complex, so many player choices.

And it's insanely unstable, the further into it you get.

I'm now at the end of Act 2, and the game has started routinely crashing every 20 minutes. It's infuriating.

The game itself is beautiful. The stability is for ♥♥♥♥.

Exceptional immersive sim design. Thief / Prey / Deus Ex, with a heavy heavy dose of survival horror atmosphere.

Some of the best level design going, along with a very considered, deliberate intuition for world building.

Highly recommended!!
