tl;dr: This game alone makes the $800 I spent on an Oculus Rift worth it.

In its early days, I would have had a hard time recommending H3VR to most people, or even myself. It was a sandbox game with very little in the way of goals or objectives. Sure, the firearms were meticulously detailed with realistic operation and ballistics simulation, but it still required you to make your own fun.

That was then, this is now. Rust Ltd. and the principal developer Anton Hand have been extremely active over the past several years, adding not just heaps of new guns and other weapons, but also engrossing goal-based game modes. Take & Hold, where you collect randomized loot and defend capture points against robot hot dogs, is alone worth the price of admission - and that's before the extensive revamp that's currently under way.

And that's just the beginning... other modes include the arena-style Meatmas Snowglobe, Old West theme park Wurstworld, zombie rogue-lite adventure Return of the Rotweiners, and survival horror Meat Grinder, which I swear I'll work up the courage to play any day now. And then there's the recently-released Meat Fortress, which chucks all semblance of realism out the window to let you play with TF2's weapons in VR. And if you couldn't already tell from those pun-filled names, it's all surrounded by a winking sense of humor that stands in stark contrast to the (mostly) realistic weapons. Really, I don't think I'd have nearly as much fun with H3VR if it took itself at all seriously.

So yeah, one of the best VR games currently available. The worst I can say about it is that the controls can be tricky to figure out, and not as well explained as they might be. But between the "Sampler Platter" scene and Anton's tutorial videos, you can bring yourself up to speed with a little effort.

I know what you're probably thinking: this game looks like Napoleon Dynamite and Symphony of the Night had a kid. And you'd be partially right - it's a metroidvania where the protagonist is a doofy geek whose fashion sense is stuck somewhere in between the 1970s and 80s. But it's also a wonderfully surreal, sharply-written yet deeply ridiculous odyssey through a high school at the edge of the apocalypse and its bizarre capsule universe of classroom-based worlds. And this doofy geek can kick some serious ass. You'd never catch Jon Heder surfing on a shark, that's for damn sure!

As noted, the writing is strong throughout. The graphics, while low-key in terms of presentation, are nicely detailed and expressive, with interesting, imaginative enemy designs and some Gilliam-esque touches in the backgrounds. The soundtrack is top-notch, even if it never quite reaches the (very) high bar set by the theme song you heard in the trailer.

Gameplay-wise, the combat is decently fluid and varied. There's a tremendous number of offensive skills available, with the player eventually given free reign to choose two hot-swappable groups of four plus a movement ability. Most of them are useful in some way, and have some neat animations and effects, especially as they're upgraded. It's not difficult to build a loadout that allows you to smoothly chain attacks together, but also easy to come up with one that will leave you with significant, flow-breaking gaps in your offense as you wait for abilities to recharge. The slotting of skills into tiers like "Trash", "Ok", and "Good" also means that you'll have to constantly swap them out for better ones, which can be annoying but also forces you to try new skills you may have otherwise ignored. All in all, a decently solid package.

On the negative side, while a couple of the bosses gave me some minor problems the game quickly becomes way too easy if you do most of the sidequests. Past the game's midpoint, my Daryl's skills and equipment made him practically invincible, and he had enough cash to easily clean out every vendor he ran into. And a little before the Point of No Return the game seems to give up on balance entirely, with areas containing massive numbers of infinitely respawning mobs that are easily killed with late-game AOE skills, allowing you to max Daryl out with almost no effort. A bit of an anticlimax after all that judicious rationing of Textbooks and skill XP... adjustable difficulty probably could have helped a bit. Also, the game's map is pretty useful, but could have been a little clearer when it came to telling me where I needed to go next. As a result I wound up doing a lot of wandering, which come to think of it might be why I got so overpowered so soon. So overall, balance could be better.

But regardless, I enjoyed Super Daryl Deluxe's gameplay enough and was sufficiently immersed in its weird, stupid world to see it through to the end. Recommended!

Never read the comic, but this definitely piqued my interest! (which was the desired effect, I'm sure)
It reminded me of Dinosaucers... but actually good. Would love to see this become a regular series, especially if more (any) interactivity could be added via Touch or Vive wands.

The downside? It's too short! Probably 3 minutes or less; I wasn't keeping count.

Pure, stupid fun. That's Streets of Fury EX in a nutshell. It reminds me of the sort of game a bunch of my buddies in high school and I might have made, had digital cameras and cheap chromakey software been widely available then. But underneath the somewhat amateurish look is a surprisingly deep and fun side-scrolling beat 'em up, with tight controls and a robust combo system. Stringing together multi-hit beatdowns is a snap, and each of the many unlockable characters has a full arsenal of combat moves, including chargable super attacks. Up to four players can join in local co-op, and survival and challenge modes are also available. Sadly, there's no online play, nor is there a training mode to practice your combos.

If the game seems familiar, that's because it originally made its debut in 2007 on the Xbox Indie Games service, and was a finalist in the the 2008 Dream Build Play competition. The 360 version was fun, but clearly constrained by limitations of the hardware and the platform. The smooth animation of the video-captured sprites meant that only a few actors were used, and their footage spread across multiple characters with extremely similar movesets. In a genre that's already heavy on repitition, that's not a good thing. But for the remaster, the developers added a slew of new, distinct brawlers, many of whom parody popular fighting game icons (check out the martial artist with his Ryu-style Shin Shoryuken, or the scarf-wearing send-up of Street Fighter 3's Q). Guard Crush Games even apparently got one of their dads to play the end boss! The fighting system has also been revised, with some control changes and a "stamina" meter added, which can be used for powerful special moves or to block enemy attacks.

Overall, this is definitely worth a look even if you played the original eight years ago (yikes, has it really been that long?).
