If you don't care about the driving model AT ALL, this can be a game for you. If you do, go play some Forza.

This is why I like indie games. A short self-contained single player experience with good ideas, something to say, and piles of charm.

Gameplay is mainly exploration and meeting new characters. Exploration is allowed through gadgets, and by adding new gadgets, new areas are unlocked as the story progresses. I was impressed how the game can have such well though through mechanics with relatively limited production values. All the gadgets and puzzles feels logical, polished and fun!

Unfortunately it's not as plain sailing in the technical department. The game is not spared an occasional switch-gone-bad bug or the "quantum door effect" where the door is open and closed at the same time. However, nothing a game reload wouldn't fix. The auto-saves are frequent and well made so it's not a problem. The only thing that could still use some attention are the optimizations. Frame rate dips in the larger areas are something you need to get used to and distracted me a bit from the immersion. Luckily, since there's not combat or any real danger, the technical issues won't spoil your progress.

In fact I found it remarkable that a game that doesn't allow you to fire a single shot from a gun and where nobody dies - except for where story demands it - can be so much fun. Chapeau to the designers.

This brings me to the last point I would like to make. Since there is no combat and since most of the interactions in the game are very positive, one could expect a wholesome stress-free experience. Be warned, this is not 100% the case here. The story takes a more serious turn and tells a grand finale which quite honestly felt a bit out of place, given both the production values of the game as well as the tone set in the first phase. Usually such a change of pace is a good thing, but in this case it left me a little disappointed. However, it should be said that this is purely subjective! In the end the authors stick the landing and manage to tell the story they wanted to. Far be it from me to tell them otherwise.

By all means this game is recommended!

I read some reviews after finishing the game and I feel like they are too mean. Granted, this game has no puzzles and very little freedom, but the storytelling is solid, visuals compelling and the atmosphere just works. It feels like a good book. And while unlike some other games that are trying to leverage mechanisms unique to the medium of videogame while telling stories The Invincible stops at the audiovisual experience from the perspective of the hero, I'm OK with it! It's fun and there's nothing wrong with it! Occasional weird texture or strange lighting will remind you that this has no AAA busget, but the style and charm make up for it more then enough. If walking simulators are your thing, this one won't disappoint.

Good fun. The gore and weird story is not for everybody, but the gameplay is compelling enough to make me want to stick with it. In fact, it's too short!

If you are looking for a point and click adventure experience, and I certainly wouldn't blame you, as the game certainly looks like one, you might find yourself a bit disappointed from a lack of gameplay. There's very little puzzles to be cracked or freedom to explore vast locations. You will be mostly strictly following the story with occasional decision to be made that might or might not influence the events to come. But if you can see past that, this game is a gem. The story and the dialogs are excellent and together with beautiful visual arts, amazing music and flawless voice acting build a strong atmosphere that has resonated with me for months. I truly care about the characters and feel every one of their difficult choices. I've never been the biggest fan of Daedlic games. Their games have often good stories and nice visuals but lack in smooth gameplay. This one plays to their strengths though and makes up for a truly enjoyable experience.
