If you're thinking about playing the Amnesia series, skip this one and stick to Descent and maybe Bunker.

Rebirth has a very good ending, and a few very nice parts sprinkled along the way, surrounded by a very mediocre and disappointing experience that leaves you wondering if Frictional only tries to make a good game every other release.

Beautiful game with wonderful things added that shines over the last game - but despite having larger hubs for puzzles, the new setup strangely makes the game feel much smaller than its predecessor. Some of the new equipment added is nice, but others uninspired. Despite having the new tools, the puzzle solutions are pretty straightforward and simple. Many times I found myself overthinking a puzzle because the solution was much simpler than I gave it credit for.

The first game was phenomenal, but this feels like a step back.

Beat one run in 6 hours. Good on 25% sale. If you're a fan of the series it's a decent installment. I'd put it above Rebirth and Pigs, but falling short compared to Dark Descent, SOMA, or Penumbra. As for the rest of this review, some of it might be semi-spoilery, especially for players who want to go in completely blind (which you should if you want to fully enjoy this experience.)

A lot of the mechanics and animations for tools are really nice, but they're stuck behind the cumbersome inventory system that doesn't lend itself very well to frantic situations when an enemy is coming towards you. Environments are very nice and the whole 'Bunker' area feels complete, with a mild amount of personality given to the characters introduced only through notes. That being said, the open world and randomization of the pickups detracts from the story progression a bit, as a more linear experience like that of the previous games offers better pacing for introducing story elements. Fewer voice-overs than other Frictional titles - I think more voices for the characters would have made the cast feel more alive.

Worth it for fans, maybe fun for those new to the series.

the atmosphere was great at the beginning, but I was heavily disappointed with the clunkiness of the actual encounters. This game desperately needs to redo their visual designs for objects that the player can interact with. It is a headache to find very specific things hidden on the wall amidst weird black vine growths in a dark basement during chases.

Definitely worth it on sale. More destructible environments would make it worth full price, but it feels like doors are the only thing that you can destroy. The content dries up pretty quickly, too. More guns, cosmetics, and unlocks are a must. Worth it if you have at least 3 or more friends who like the difficulty.
