Much fun with friends, if you have none singleplayer just as fun.

4 years of game later, I still cannot recommend this thing.

Elite is vast, complex and has a borderline EVE Online spreadsheet kind of game-play. Frontier is constantly keeping the game one inch above life support, every update feels deep down incomplete, even the Fleet carrier update lacks a true purpose, and to my suspect even Odyssey will.
Yes, the community is great, they are truly the gem of this game, but a game cannot only rely on it.
There is only so much cargo you can move around the galaxy, only so many pirates you can blast (and believe me you have to blast quite a bit of them).

You grind your way up the ships ladder, the equip, the engineering... but then there's nothing to use it for. So much potential, so many possibilities wasted like tears in the rain.

7/10 for the all potential
4/10 for the commitment

TLDR
do buy if you :
-love a good community
-like a chill game
-can put up with the learning curve
-find grind very similar to "content"

do not buy:
-space is cruel and unforgiving
-you will waste quite a bit of your life on it
-will lack some basic features
-space combat is mostly circling around
