You can tell this game was made with a lot of love just playing through the prologue. The characters are so good, they have their quirks and they're not perfect but they have their own goals, ideals, and sorrows which really gets you attached to them. It's amazing how in this fantastical story of painted wonders the human interaction keeps up as one of the most interesting parts.

The segmentation of the game into 3 Acts plays perfectly in your exploration of the world, as well finalizing parts of the story that not only continue the narrative in a great way, but also have gameplay effects that make you want to switch up your current style.

Last thing I'll talk about is the music, which is insane. 154 tracks that I don't think a single one I didn't appreciate in some capacity. Exploration while these tracks play was a delight and hearing that this is a first time for the composer doing something like this, I have high hopes for future releases just on the music alone.

This is absolutely one of the best games of 2025.

Don't purchase yet, needs some moderate tweaks/patches for some systems that are pretty important to the experience.

1. The AI system, A-Life, is currently nonexistent. This is IMO a third the point of the entire game by having a lived in world. NPCs are spawned about 20-50 meters away from you so sometimes you will actually just see people pop up out of nowhere. Or you will encounter the 7th bloodsucker in the lesser zone in a row.
2. The mutants themselves don't really have good ways to dodge them outside of just run straight back and shoot them. In previous games you could dodge boars by sprinting perpendicular to their path. Now they just auto-lock on you and seem to automatically hit when getting close.

Graphically the game is amazing, which should be expected with a game built in Unreal Engine 5. Atmospherics are cool, the thunderstorms maybe happen a bit too much. Would like to just experience rain more. Sound quality is generally good, there are some issues with NPCs talking over radio suddenly sounding like they're right next to you.

Overall the game has the makings to be extremely good. The skeleton is there they just need to improve and tweak the AI system and numbers some more. A really cool idea would be to allow the difficulty some modularity although its not super important as long as they're all balanced effectively. I haven't seen many bugs so far other than 1 person floating above a bed. Also PLEASE bring back reload while sprinting.

Give it some time for patches to come out.

Amazing quality in the graphics, soundtrack and characters, except maybe the comically evil mom. Side quests are pretty meh mechanically but I liked how they let us close out the set pieces outside the main story. Combat while being the most simple out of every final fantasy so far (no element differences, no status effects) made up for it with the bombastic animations and effects.

I heard it was like an interactive movie before buying so I was predisposed to expecting that and got exactly what I came for and more. Incredible Final Fantasy action scenes and characters that made me sad when the game was finally over.

Completing all the side quests, hunts and main story + DLCs netted me about 60 hours and could easily be more if you wanted to do NG+ for the level cap, gear and challenge. I personally liked the story and side quest stories so I didn't really skip much dialogue, helped that it was all voice acted too. I also think the character development for Clive was really good, but wish that more characters got some of that too.

I would say if you're interested in bombastic fantasy action, get the game. If you like the Final Fantasy setting in general, get the game. If you like turn-based jRPGs that have a lot of depth of mechanics, maybe don't get the game.

9/10 for me, great story, great characters, good gameplay, spectacular visuals

Wish I could say it only needed a few more months in the oven and it would turn out perfect, but unfortunately even though the game is beautiful and combat feels great the game is fundamentally flawed with its story, quest system and just overall map design (enemy wise). Just gonna say the story was straight up mediocre bordering on bad, little cohesion, doesn't serve the gameplay in any way, and pulls strange twists that just fall flat, honestly the post-game world main quest was the only one I thought was actually interesting.

The quest system in general tries to pull off this "don't hold your hands" ideology where you are 10% relying on non-cryptic information from quest-giver/townsfolk on where to go (good luck) or the other 90%, the pawn you've hired has done with quest before and just leads the way for you.

The really fun part of the game, the combat, is super insanely fun. Weapon animations and skills are animated super well, they have flashy, but not dumb, effects. Weapons have this awesome weight when attacking that overall just makes playing a warrior (not the class) awesome, and mages/sorcerer magic creates awesome effects. Unfortunately 95% of the time you will be using these abilities on the same goblin, hobgoblin or humanoid bandit you run into every 5 meters on the road.

It's not a *bad* game IMO, it ticks a lot of the right boxes for a cool RPG but honestly the graphics, art design and animations really feel like its hard carrying an unfinished mechanic and story-wise game. Easily not worth $70 for the base game, hopefully they pull a DD:DA but even better or they even update the base game, but It's been 5 months with only some minor bug-fixes so don't hold your breath on that.

Super fun, very nice looking, and responsive gameplay. I love me a PvE Co-op shooter to play with the boys. Difficulties 5-~7 usually have a good fun/tense ratio. However the recent (time of this review) balance patch came out and damn what a disappointment.

3 Nerfs to the "Meta" guns/tools and 6 buffs, 4 to weapons and 2 to stratagems, when a majority of primaries in the game are pretty dogwater in stats and how they handle. Some people think when a "meta" (Actually usable equipment in difficulties 8-9 without ruining your enjoyment of the game) forms that oh wow obviously its op so gotta nerf it but if you actually play test your game you'll notice that there's some serious issues with weapon viability when you push that difficulty to the limit.

Yeah, obviously when the game starts pushing the limits of the player, there's going to be outliers of weapons/tools that are just straight up good, you want to win so you'll use the "meta" because contrary to popular belief winning and fun are correlated. All this balance patch has done is just make the game more frustrating at higher difficulties because what, you nerfed the railgun and think "now this player can use the laser cannon we've freed him from the meta chains :)))." No you weasel because what is the laser cannon going to actually do, kill 1/5th of a charger, overheat and then I explode violently from the acid being spit into my face? Use the counter sniper that is made entirely out of lead so it sways around like a palm tree in a hurricane?

It makes me seriously doubt the expertise of the balancing team when they hand out nerfs on the first balance patch to try and justify telling people to use other guns. News flash (most) of the other guns feel like ♥♥♥♥ or are just straight up unusable in higher level content. I WANT to play higher level content with a variety of weapons but I'm not going to do that if it becomes un-fun, and I'm not saying oh I want to win every helldive mission gimme free medals, I'm saying I want a fighting chance at winning, but in between most of the mediocre feeling arsenal, the incredibly long stratagem cool downs, and some extremely annoying mission modifiers, it makes me wonder how AH studios is gonna keep the game fun long term if this is the first balance patch.

October 2024 Edit: They finally realized that their balance philosophy was utter garbage and have switched to performing a lot of balanced buffs to some under-performing weapons and some nice changes to those that were a little too niche. Unfortunately it took them this long to figure out but hey at least they finally did it.
