Early Access Review
First Note that this game was supposed to be released during the Summer but was given to us by demand eight months early so the negative feedback about how this game is so slow with updates and whatever doesn't count.
For a current 4 member DEV team doing all of the work, they're doing a great job with updates, communication and so forth. The forums don't seem to understand this as every other post is something about it and the answer is obvious.
"We demanded it eight months early from the early access schedule release."

This is a very difficult game. It's also requires your micro/macro from an RTS based on a zombie defense game.
To be alert is key because one literal slip up can ruin hours of work. One zombie that somehow slips in and overlooked mistake can ruin your day. Awareness and your minimap are big tools.

You currently have four different maps to play on and each map brings its own "brutality'. Your goal is embrace the rough spot they gave you and survive. Not to spoil anything here; map four brings a lot of the community players their greatest challenge.

You have two categories of difficulties that together can make a really challenging game or to newer or slower speed players their fun as well. Fun for everyone.
You have the Game Duration;
Easy which is 150 days, Accessible which is 120 days, Challenging which is 100 days and Brutal. Which gives you more or less time to build before the hordes arrive.
Then we have Infection Population;
Just A Few Infected(Easiest), Very Low Population (Easy). Low Population (Accessible), Medium Population (Challenging) and High Population (Brutal).
Which affect how many infected are on the map and from the beginning and the size of the hordes that periodically come to your colony.
So mix matching these or making them all Brutal can make your experience challenging and fun.

With your different types of troops, food income, iron, stone, oil, energy, gold, wood, workers to your different upgrades to your different defenses. Your gameplay, you can change it how you want. But always be aware. The advancements of technology is nice, along with the Mayors which in game you end up gathering four of them that grant you specific things depending on one of the two that you choose per time.

Once you get the hang of everything, the game really is understandable but still a challenge.

With the DEV’s working on their campaign right now along with a few more updates and hotfixes, they’re doing a good job for the size of their team and how early this early-early access is. That is something to always remember while playing. This game was given to us so much early by demand. Four months shy of one year of the original early access.

The last thing I want to say is that the title of the game They Were Billions, don’t think of that like “Oh, some hundred zombies.” You will get 20,000+ at a time attacking you, The fun in that is exciting.
