Paid 60 bucks, can't play the game in which I paid 60 dollars for, endless infinite matchmaking wait even when trying to play solo in a private match, by myself.. with bots.

Uninstalled and refunded, simple as that.

I have been playing quake for years, but im only 18, so my experience is still limited compared to those who i would encounter on quake 1 and quake live servers. I would almost always get my ass kicked, i came to champions with the mechanic changes in mind with a pessimistic opinion about them. But jumping into the game, I found it was more quake-like then i would imagine, I finally found myself kicking ass, almost always top fragging and enjoying the changes made. of course the refreshment to the mechanics and a new wave of players coming to quake, has its issues. It is early access, but I will critise it out of love. In my time of playing instagib, I saw shots that I should of hit, miss, and shots i should of missed, hit. Most noticable incident is when i shot a rail through a wall and it mysteriously killed someone. although this specific incident only happened once, such thing shouldnt even be possible especially for an early access game that is already being played in official e-sports tournaments.

Of course a big elephant in the room for a lot of long time quake players, is the in-game microtransactions which have seen to plague and kill many games before. but after investigating it for quite a while now, I think the micro-transactions are mostly restricted in good taste. where the things you can buy with only the premium currency are vanity items and experience boosters, which bring no advantage in-game. I think these micro-transactions are in good taste as it allows the game to recieve funding but also allow the game to be much more accessible to newcomers to experiment with as it is free to play. of course a lot of people would respond with the fact that the free to play version locks off most of the champions. to this I would say that im personally concerned about the fact that free to play players only have 2 champions to play in ranked 1 v 1 duels. which their opponent would have the usual 3 champions, giving them a huge disadvantage. Besides this, you can unlock champions with the fame currency, which is tastefully awarded to you after every match, both unranked and ranked and the amount depending on how well you performed. you can use this currency to now permanently unlock champions. which is a greatful change from the devs where originally the fame currency could only be used to rent champions. another note some people would make is that the new players are at a disadvantage because everyone has "better" champions, i would disagree. I shelled out 30 bucks for the champions pack, and I still use ranger in 1 v 1 duels because his ability is still one of the best out of all the champions, and i still break a sweat when going against scale bearer because of his huge health pool and his potential huge armor stack. i see other champions simply allowing more people to play in their own personal style, but they arent 'better', it is thankfully not as cut clean like that.

Now another issue I am personally concerned with is the fact that the game is simply so accessible, yet so shut off. in quake live there was more maps that i could ever remember, in quake champions? 11 maps. but quake live had a stunning 160 maps in just the base game, thats not counting workshop maps and other ones you will find on sites like game banana and such. but in quake champions there isnt even a possibility to create a custom map. so you are stuck with the 11 maps they are gven to you and its up to the devs to create or port new ones over, which will they will obviously do but it is still freedom taken away. this is a huge issue for me as it stops me from really falling in love with the game, since the entire game is reliant on centralised servers and the maps are only coming from one place, from the same people who all have more-or-less unified image of the game, this takes away from the magic of the community massively, the coupled facts that 1) the maps are limited and there is no way to create your own map and 2) the servers are completely company owned and there is absolutely no way to host your own server on your own machine, really makes me question the life-span of the game once zenimax and bethesda will no longer support it and also the reliability of the devs and servers themselves during its lifetime. I quake champions needs to adopt CS:GO's way of doing things, a completely harmless micro-transcation system, which it has already achieved for the most part, a matchmaking system which i actually like quite a bit, an elo system which you can actively see how many elo points you have. but also keep it open, leave a console for users to play with, let players customize their crosshairs and HUD organization, POV settings like walking sway, let them enable their HUD and gun model as they wish and allow players to host their own server on their own servers and machines and let players create their own maps. both quake live and CS:GO has all of this and they have both sprouted many sub-communities because of this and the freedom of server mods all while keeping the game alive.

The latter part of this review is from years ago. They have fixed all issues mentioned in my review. Good game. Much recommended.

this is really disapointing, the linux port has clearly no effort put into it. it randomly crashes so badly you are lucky if you get more then 15 minutes in the game. anti-aliasing doesnt work everytime you enable to it flashes the window alot. if you change your volume or brightness or have any notification the screen downgrades res and goes in the corner. running the game with wine is far more stable then running the linux port in linux. 2/10
