After taking a break for 3 years, I decided to jump back into Dauntless and brought along a friend who had never played before. Here’s my perspective after spending some time gaming with him:

First off, Dauntless is still fun. It’s a great pick if you’re looking for a casual game that you can enjoy for an hour or two each day—or just on weekends—without feeling like it’s taking over your life. It scratches that gaming itch without demanding tryhard dedication, making it perfect for players with busy schedules.

New Player Experience
For those worried about the reviews, let me say this: Dauntless is a softer, more relaxed version of Monster Hunter. It’s designed for chilling and having fun, not stressing. The worst-case scenario? You spend a couple of hours exploring and decide it’s not for you. That’s a low-risk gamble for a potentially rewarding experience.

That said, I do agree with some concerns. The difficulty for new players ramps up pretty quickly after the first couple of hours, and solo hunts can get tough. But the game is much more fun with friends or by teaming up with others, so I’d recommend diving into co-op early on to make the journey smoother.

The Big Update Debate
A hot topic among players is the new system where you can’t craft weapons directly. While it’s not as groundbreaking or game-changing as some might have hoped, one aspect has stood out—and not necessarily in a good way. The removal of weapon crafting has been a sticking point for many, especially veteran players who appreciated that feature.
For new players, though, this change isn’t as impactful. Since Dauntless is PvE-focused, the progression system feels more about the journey than rushing to the destination. You’ll still unlock weapons over time, and unless you’re aiming for hardcore optimization, the absence of crafting shouldn’t be a dealbreaker.

Why You Should Give It a Try
For newcomers hesitant because of recent negative reviews, here’s my advice: Try it for what it is today. Dauntless offers plenty of cool Behemoths to hunt, satisfying combat mechanics, and a relaxed vibe for those who want to enjoy gaming without high stakes or pressure. It’s a solid game for chilling after a long day or exploring on the weekends.

Final Thoughts
To be clear, this review isn’t an endorsement of all the recent changes. Personally, I’d love to see weapon crafting return—it would make the game even better for new players. But as someone coming back after 3 years, I’m having fun exploring the new content and facing the fresh challenges it brings. I completely understand why some longtime players feel frustrated, but for newcomers, there’s plenty to enjoy.

This is my review for the moment. It might change—whether positively or negatively—as I progress further in the game. Feel free to leave a comment, whether it’s good or bad, so we can discuss if you feel like it.
