Sony's decision to require a third-party account for a game that has functioned perfectly well without one is the definition of disingenuity. It is unfortunate that their choices affect the developer and the community so negatively.

I liked this game. I disliked being forced to describe it.

The #1 thing to keep in mind about this game is that it is a Space Simulator. There is a definitely learning curve as controls are numerous and realistic, and simulation is often tedious and unforgiving. You can choose from various unglamorous career roles - trader, bounty hunter, pirate, explorer, miner - but there is little fanfare for your achievements. You're not the main character in a story, and the game isn't giving you many instructions. You write your own story, but in a to-scale galaxy where you are largely insignificant.

That said, Elite Dangerous offers a ton of activities to keep you busy and make a mark on its background simulator. Some of the game progression - engineering/rank/technology unlocks - are tedious, but many happen naturally as you explore all elements of the game. The sound design is top-notch, and though a bit dated now, the graphics are still satisfying. Frontier continues to expand gameplay and build the universe, and I find myself returning to Elite again and again. The next expansion, Odyssey, is just another example of this.

The game truly shines in VR. With head tracking, accessing ship controls and tracking targets become second nature. Pair this with a nice pair of headphones and the virtual presence is very convincing - a must try.

Great when things are going well, and even better when they're chaotic.
