This game has kicked ass up and down the block since 99. Complaints are never ending about nearly any beloved game or game series, so let me just address the complaints among the all-time most "helpful" negative reviews for this game.
1. The AI does't work at all - so this was an issue. Fixed now. like, its not doing those things anymore. Disregard for contemporary considerations, unless you have a time machine and your computer will auto-de-update if you take it with you. That's the only time this should concern you anymore.
2. "If you plan on playing in multiplayer, then you will have to expect a never-ending tsunami of crap coming your way from afar." Yeah. No. This is NOT a bug, glitch, poor programming, or anything else of the sort. Viz-a-viz the AI its simply a more challenging and engaging AI (lower the difficulty genius) and viz-a-viz other humans it's nothing more than that hallmark characteristic of playing with other people. Namely, some are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good as ♥♥♥♥. Others are competent and not to be dealt with as if they were an original AoK campaign AI set to Standard Difficulty. It's not too hard, and it's not insurmountable to learn and react this happening (when it even does happen).
3. map/scenario editor being "removed." Yeah... that's just flat out incorrect in the most astoundingly complete sense of the term. Not only is the scenario editor still very much included, it's even been expanded upon and trigger writing has been made much more in-depth than the original game's.
4."no LAN support" - instead of having a button for LAN, a button for TCP/IP, another for (so on and so forth), everything has been SIGNIFICANTLY simplified and streamlined. If you want to host an oldschool LAN party you totally can. Just create a private lobby and invite your friends. Your ping will be 1 cuz youre all seated around the same table and there will not be internet lag issues here. So no, not technically LAN anymore. But it is not a concept which is without it's own modern edition of equal caliber.
5. Bad FPS lag, choppy game performance, poor AI performance, etc: Check the dates on these complaints. Then refer to item 1 at the top of this list.
6. Can't change resolution - ok so this IS actually a thing that is frustrating. It's just true to be honest. Good news though! There IS a work-around. It can be found on AoE2's steam community page under the Guides tab or in the Discussions tab.
7. No new content - that. just. ... no? There's 3 new expansions? There's a prebuilt slot for a 4th? Microsoft has announced official renewal of company interest in the product? Idk where this particular complaint comes from at all.


Seriously though, this game is and always has been amazing. Beautiful simple enough to enjoy casually while thoroughly in-depth enough to wholly occupy your mind in thoughts of strategy, army comp, ally civ pairing optimizations, team-wide unique unit utilizations, economic plans and etc. for as far down the rabbit hole as you personally want to go. If the new AI is geniunely just totally ruining the game for you, good news! You can use the original AI too! Just set the Computer players names to "Original AI" instead of "AI." Wham bam thank you mam, kicking it hold school again.

Furthermore: if you played this game while riding out Y2K, then DEFINITELY buy it and find that the community is still very much active and games are almost always avaliable in any variation you may prefer. Join us! Your country game needs you!
