You have to be real with yourself on a number of fronts and temper your expectations (whatever they were) before entering Starfield. There is a lot to love here, and a nearly equal amount to dislike. If you're coming from Elite Dangerous, this isn't that. If you're coming from No Man's Sky, this isn't that. If you're coming from Fallout or pre-Skyrim Elder Scrolls, this is kind of that, but not as narratively deep. You need to be willing to enjoy the game on its own terms, and not as Bethesda's direct response to any one game. Only then will you be able to really enjoy yourself like I have and create meaning where there can often be none, at least tangibly.

If you liked those moments of introspection when crossing the Glowing Sea in Fallout 4 or Forgotten Vale in Skyrim (both scenic and atmospheric in their own ways), then you'll like Starfield. It's that on a cosmic scale. If I'm being honest, if i had to traverse everywhere in the same slow, monotonous way I did in Elite Dangerous with none of the same attention to detail and sound design in the ship (which Bethesda obviously did not consider a priority), I'd never do so anyway. Fast travel was trimming the fat in a way that most players will not mind, myself included.

If you like space, you own a NASA shirt, you really liked the crafting/settlement building/looting cycle of Fallout 4, or some combination of the three, just get the game. This is easily Bethesda's best writing from their in-house team (take that as you will), and I found what was on offer to be more than enough for what my expectations were. If you're super skeptical to get it, wait until full mod support arrives some time in 2024.

Genuinely such a waste of time. The initial intrigue devolves into a convoluted, unimaginably dour mess made worse by the abysmal voice acting (except for Willem Dafoe, as expected). Twelve minutes is the amount of time you should spend with this game before returning it or deriding your friend for gifting it to you.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Stanley Parable 8: A New Kind of Choice. Also, if you don't care for prequels and are tired of sequels, I suggest you try out the midquel and play The Beginner's Guide, an experience essential to fully understanding the magnitude of this entry in the expansive Stanley Parable franchise.

if there's one thing i want this game to do to the public consciousness, it's for people to associate generic jazz with this instead of persona 5

It is so difficult to recommend this game. The only thing that I can say is that it's a good stealth game, but a horrible Metal Gear game. You can do a lot of the legwork on your own with mods, which I guess is no different from any standard Bethesda ordeal, but it shouldn't be that way considering the series' pedigree.
