If you like looter shooters, this one is decent. However . . .

The story is a mediocre Heart of Darkness plot that drags on with repetitive combat arenas and low enemy variety, the gameplay is a bit janky, and all the skill expression is in buildcrafting because the dodge button is useless. Endgame mostly involves killing everything before it can attack so you don't have to use it.

And it would be remiss of me not to mention the map system, because it is truly, truly awful. It might actually improve the game to have no map, it's that bad. Not only is there absolutely no way to see exactly where you are or even what direction you are facing, sometimes the quest markers point you in the wrong direction, rendering them useless as well. The only way to orient yourself (besides memorizing the maps), is to switch areas and check the map. Half the time, switching areas spawns enemies that have to be killed before you can interact with anything, even if they never see or shoot you. To top it all off, to switch regions you need to return to your camp every time, and you cannot choose which waypoint you are placed at when going to a new area, which adds 2 unnecessary loading screens to almost every trip.

But the real reason it's getting a Not Recommended is because the latest expansion (which I do not own but have heard is horrendously overpriced) "rebalanced" all the classes and gear whether you have it or not. And by rebalanced I of course mean significantly nerfed, with all of the compensatory buffs exclusive to the expansion. To be clear, the endgame is doable even with the nerfs, but the game isn't good enough to be recommended through the issues and business practices.

This has to be the epitome of sandbox gaming. In regular sandboxes moving around is too slow and boring for me to worry about the side missions and collectibles. This game streamlines the fun into concentrated joy; moving around, doing side missions, collecting collectibles, and doing the main storyline are all best described by the word brilliant.

The side missions are varied enough that they don't get too repetitive, and the most repetitive ones are general focused on combat, which is truly glorious, especially against weaker enemies. Or with your powers upgraded. Weaker powers vs stronger enemies will make combat far less entertaining.

One of the best sandbox games out there, with one minor quibble. The map is TOO big. That may sound petty, but once you get in, even a jet will give you time to think about your life choices if you decide to fly it across the map, and if you end up on foot in the mountains you may as well jump to your death to get places faster.

Once past that, though, the hookshot is a glory to behold, and actively encouraging blowing up fuel silos is something any player of a sandbox can get behind.
