Distilled factory goodness in a beautiful and polished package. Building in small and large scale is really fun when you embrace modular designs. Looking forward to the full release, but already having dozens of hours of fun with a steady stream of satisfying challenges.

Worthy successor to Severed Steel, one of my favorite shooters ever.

I'm writing this review without much playtime, but I had more hours in the pre-release demos. I wasn't blown away by those, but now playing the full release everything has really come together and it just shines.

Having no real nostalgia for the particular era of computer games this evokes, the price and large unit selection is what got my attention. Then it defied any expectations of clunkiness or steep learning curve I might have had about what looked like "an old computer war game". The in-game tutorial is more than enough to get you up to speed in one short session -- but the whole design of the gameplay, feeling much like a board game, is very approachable.

The loop is kind of simple compared to most war sims, but its roguelike qualities keep the game fresh with unpredictability and high stakes. Your tactics also have to change quite a bit from run to run, depending on your chosen (or randomly selected) tank.

Special mention to the art. At first I thought the tank portraits were just pixel art made to look retro. Realizing that they're constructed out of PETSCII characters kind of blew my mind, especially with the sheer variety on display, and the entire game being rendered like this. I have a great appreciation for how these text characters are put to clever and creative use to represent the game world and effects.

A cornerstone of gaming that is amazingly still alive and kicking.

Light content is more than made up for with an engine that is one of the biggest leaps the series has ever made, in all aspects. I hesitate to even call the content "light" since the quality of it is so high-tier.
