Adorable as heck demon ladies, decent puzzles and a boss challenge. A bit on the short side but it's free so I can't really complain.

Also, pancakes.

Outer Wilds deserves respect for its creativity and direction but unfortunately, I did not find my experience to be enjoyable.

Reasons below for the fence riders:

  • The spacecraft controls and physics have a moderately painful learning curve. Beyond said curve you will still periodically experience moments of frustration.
  • Gameplay loop consists of exploring, discovering and investigating interplanetary points of interest BUT you are on a time limit which ends with losing all kinetic progress. You will enjoy this game if you are an enthusiast for continuously traveling to the same planets, chipping out flakes of information and repeating the process all over again. I am not.
  • The solutions to progression are cut and dry leaving a modicum of replay value. I suppose there is always the option for a dementia-induced lobotomy. I will pass.

Tomb Raider 2013 but with worse movement and aiming mechanics.

Play the superior game from 2005 instead of this underwhelming imitation.

Having enjoyed playing through the first Psychonauts game this year (2022) my expectations for the long awaited sequel were quite high. I can say with confidence that Psychonauts 2 absolutely delivers as a sequel to its predecessor and even exceeds it in many ways.

Quality-of-life experience is improved across the board and the production value is comparable to many 3d animated films. I also found myself more attached to the cast than the original game and the environments are full of various, eccentric NPCs that establish a more immersive environment than ever before.

Psychonauts 2 isn't perfect: combat can become a juggling act with PSI-powers, Raz's fellow interns become less involved and underdeveloped despite their importance during the game's climax, and the final portion of the game is underwhelming despite how brilliant everything leading up to it is. Some may also find disappointment with the more platforming-focused level design compared to the more experimental level mechanics of the first game.

Regardless, I consider Psychonauts 2 a must play and the best 3D platformer I have played since Super Mario Galaxy.

Please do not make the same mistake I did and give Square Enix your money. You are better off using "other" methods to play this lovely game that deserves far more respect than what this embarrassment of a gaming company has given it. Absolutely gutted by this "remaster".

For anyone that has an affinity for unique 3D platformers and a moderate tolerance for early-3D gaming jank, I can only highly recommend Psychonauts. Every level offers its own unique gameplay elements while also providing a story behind the individual’s mind that you’ve hopped into. The main protagonist, Raz, is surrounded by a memorable cast that are backed up by their humorous and witty dialogue. In many ways, this game exceeds its contemporaries in the genre with a less grounded approach and it is worth playing for that reason alone.

A word of warning - Psychonauts is a product of its time and suffers some issues that may bother players accustomed to modern gaming experiences: the game is littered with loading screens, the 8 PSI-power have to annoyingly be managed among 3 buttons, the cutscenes are low-quality, pre-rendered video which clash heavily with the real-time rendered visuals, and in general, the game doesn’t have the smooth control of a modern game.

If you can get past these issues then you will be rewarded with one of the most memorable games in the last 20 years.

Few games, if any, epitomize the description "timeless classic" more than DOOM. Every bit is fantastic: the movement, the enemies, the level design, the weapon variety and the music. Nothing more to be said; just play it.
