Early Access Review
Bought the game two years ago, still can't play the full game.

Really sad that this is the state of the game.

Edit:

Took them 3 years since I bought it, but hey game is fun now. Glad it's out.

I've been playing the Monster Hunter series since 2009 and let me go over my thoughts on the game as a whole.

Overall Score: 8/10

Gameplay: 9/10
The overall gameplay in MH: W is absolutely fantastic, controls are intuitive and are similar to previous versions of the series. So if you've played a previous MH game the controls are simple and easy to grasp. The only addition to this MH is the use of "Triggers" where previous games that I've played (FU, 4U, MHG) only used bumpers, which has cause a bit of confusion here and there.

Single Player, now to be fare I've played only through the Low-Rank at this point and if I feel like modifying this at a later time I will. I've played about 50/50 of the story line single player and the other half with friends. Since this MH has mostly new monsters and some old just reskinned and new quirks to them, most of the solo story feels like a new experience at every corner. Such as my hunting friend and I discussing the ferociousness of the Diablos as compared to MHFU. Legitimate terror was struck at my first encounter with the Diablos and I thoroughly enjoyed that. As well as new creature, where I can related some of the new creatures to previous, they still feel fresh I have to learn something new in how to handle a monster. I could compare the Anjanath the say the Deviljho even if they're fighting style is similar they both feel different, which I really enjoy. The biggest of these is the Radobaan and the Uragaan, basically the same creature with different armor, but I enjoy fighting both of them sill at the need of the day for different reasons.

Multiplayer, it needs work to say the least, constant disconnects with no consistency in reason (seemingly random) and the lack of a multiplayer storyline (Guild Missions). Where previous MH games had a solo story-line this one only has the solo story-line that your friends can just jump in on. I've been told tale and rumor that there will be a G-Rank DLC at some point which I will be looking forward to.

Terrain/Maps:10/10
The Map designer out did any of their previous performance in this one. Rotten Vale is by far my favorite Zone in any MH game, the zones are massive, intricate, dynamic, and most importantly, Alive. I love the idea of each map being an ecosystem where creatures live, thrive, and dominate. When an Anjanath runs up to a Rathalos nest and gets his ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, man watching them settle their differences in my favor is great every time that it happens. BUT as much as I love this idea of an ecosystem in each map I feel like they took it too close to hear when making the game and that unfortunately ended up limiting them on what they could do with each map.

Seeing that each map has an ecosystem each map must also have its hierarchy. The Ancient forest is a great example for this your creatures there in the hierarchy go Great Jagras -> Tabi-Kodachi -> Anjanath -> Rathalos -> HR Flying wyvern(BaselGeause?). Then that's it? Only four big creatures that I've seen so far, in this area?? Why not an invading Serigios(MH4U) or perhaps add a Najarala in this area, for even a few missions. The ecosystems, while well thought out, are lacking in big monsters for us to hunt. I will elaborate on this later.

QoL(Quality of Life):8/10
In MHW there are many QoL updates to the series, such as: sprinting while drinking (antidote, potions, and rations), combining items (instantly linking you to previous items that need to be crafted to make others), Fast Travel, Home Base in mission (Camps), and a few others.

Drinking in the MH series was always a risk, you did your animation(drinking and then flexing) and during this time you had no I-Frames, couldn't roll you were vulnerable. Where I liked that little risk that you had while needing to use an item the QoL works really well with how fluid the newer fights are.

Crafting Items in MH was never what I'd personally say was tedious, make item A to combine with item B to make Item C then use Item C and combine with Item D to receive Item E, and so on. I personally never found that bad but just with the addition of linking pervious items in the item combo menu is just a really nice touch to make something go smoother and a little faster as well.

Fast Travel, with fast Travel I have mixed feelings with some games, Elder Scrolls, I feel like it negates a bit of the gameplay itself. With this on the other had yes I do feel like it takes something away from the game but also adds that little space for a mistake. For example, "OH! I've spawned at the wrong camp and my friends are over there! I'll go over there!" I get that and I don't mind that but part of MH that I love so much is it is a punishing game overall, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up? Too bad, now go run across the damn map and meet up with your buds, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. That great but now that we have that fast travel and the maps are so huge, while keeping with the 50 minutes mission times it's is a nice feature to add, so I guess no points added or taken away in this part.

Camps, I love em. No more Oh ♥♥♥♥ I forgot to bring *blank* or I have the wrong weapon, you can just get it now. Personally I've only had to use it a few times to get lifepowder or grab a max potion, but I can see how it can be abused, I think maybe once per mission per player? But overall I really do like the camp aspect of the game.

Monster:5/10
Man, the monsters in this game a cool, every creature I've seen is like it's in a new light or it is just new! But there is one huge lingering issues with the monsters in this game...
The amount, in this game there are 34 large monsters (including color variants) the previous game in the series, MH: G had 71Large Monsters, with its G-Rank game coming to switch it will bring that number up to 93. And with MHW having only 34 to ship with, less for PS4 and XBone users, that's just incorrect. This is a game about Hunting Monsters, see title, and with their new focus on mismatching armor for abilities and buffs, this would have been a perfect opportunity to add almost if not most monsters from the previous series. Some might say "New engine, they have to remake the monsters from the ground up in this!" And where it is a new engine clearly, every monster from previous games has the same attack patterns, similar texturing and design, granted you would have to get those remade mostly modeling and art there.
But still I can't see why with a MH based so much around the vastness of the game they couldn't bring that 34, after a few additionally releases, to say 55 or 60. But I think this goes back to my earlier point of "backing themselves into a corner" with their idea of "big world, big ecosystem" I get that an ecosystem can't have 3 "kings" of an area but I think we could have worked in additional scenarios. I think MH4U took a good approach to this with the idea of the ecosystems getting screwed up with the Seraglios and other monsters ending up in different maps/zones and even different variants appearing. In the Ancient Forest how come we couldn't have a Najarala come in and "replace" the Tabi-Kodachi, which is a monster IMO that gets scaled out quickly, or perhaps use previous flagship monsters from other games, have the Anjanath get trampled by say a Glavinus, same monster concept and diffidently adds a bit of the "oh ♥♥♥♥" you get from monster hunter games.

Just imagine you've been fighting the Anjanath through LR quest and you fight it once in HR, then you get a quest called "Slicing through the Hierarchy" you start the quest, find the Anjanath and then suddenly bursting through the forest is a red hot Glavinus and he just slays that Anjanath in front of you. Since you've fought it plenty of times before and you maybe thought it was difficult and this big ass sword tailed T-Rex barges in and just ♥♥♥♥♥ on what you found difficult, you're gonna play it maybe a bit safer. Just a long though and rant on that.

From the small amout that I've played I can see that this game is great for a group of friends to play, whether that be at a LAN party, or just of a steam call.

Great story I enjoyed every moment of it. Unfortunantly I don't see much replay value in it nor was it worth the twenty dollars.
