This game has amazing music, amazing and unique art, good characters and is a very short-yet-sweet experience. From start to finish it's about 1-2 hours, but is certainly memorable. The final level was very engaging too and reminded me a lot of Hollow Knight. Well worth a play.

Modeus is best girl.

For those who desire a more "realistic" yet still fast paced combat experience, the Insurgency series is the series of choice. I will not deny the game's start was rocky at best, with a really poorly optimised beta and shocking performance on launch, but since then it's now at the same "acceptable" level as games like ArmA or RS2:V, where with a bit of patience you can ignore it. Combat feels hot and fresh and although you're likely to die often and inexplicably, kills feel more satisfying than in games like BF or COD. It's still a good experience, much like the original Insurgency Source game, it just lacks the modding.

My review of this game has changed a lot as the game itself has changed, issues have become apparent, been addressed and new issues filled their place. As of 01/01/25, this is my honest opinion of this game I have been playing for 11 years.

  • The grind that makes up the core gameplay loop of this game is not inherently bad, however they are want to use modifications (grind for vehicles you have unlocked) as a frustration mechanic, incentivising players to want to spend to skip this grind. Earlier in the game's history this was far less egregious, and the vehicles from that era are more acceptable, but as we progress to more modern vehicles it becomes vastly more apparent. Modern 4th generation fighter jets did not even get radar guided missiles from stock until they added active radar missiles.
  • The maps are for the large part terrible, often outsourced to 3D modelling teams who have never played the game, solely because they can easily make the assets and design to a cohesive theme. Maps are not sufficiently playtested, and any gameplay-focused changes to maps are slow and heavy handed when they do come. Many maps at higher tiers are extremely unsuitable, and the main change Gaijin has done to remedy this has been to nerf vehicle traction multiple times to a fraction of the slope navigating capabilities these vehicles were capable of irl.
  • The gamemodes have almost always been stagnant and unchanging, with very little to incentivise players to play the objective. In all modes it remains true that the gamemode is team deathmatch with a bit of objective tacked onto the side. Thus it remains true that the players of this game do not want to PTFO, and instead play TDM and leave when they stop getting kills making matches extremely short and unsatisfying.
  • The in-game tutorials plainly suck. The early ones are bad and give misinformation, and later tutorials for more modern weaponry don't work at best or are just nonexistent at worse. As such, many players in the higher tiers do not even know how to play the game. There exists sufficient knowledge within the community to be able to learn should you wish it, but many players do not look further than the game itself and so many teammates will not know how to play the game.
  • Additionally, there is no form of skill-based matchmaking in the game. This means your sole reward for being better than average is maybe more kills, but in a team based game you can only carry so much and not consistently. Better players don't average significantly higher winrate than worse players.
  • The economy is a lot, lot better than it ever was, however at its low it was probably the worst aspect of the game. It is balanced purely by algorithms on a theoretical ideal SL profit ratio determined by Gaijin and no other context factors, so vehicles that were less popular with players that did poorly but players that did well played a lot, had artificially inflated profits and so got hit with shells that cost more money to fire and higher repair costs. At its peak this really hit Italian, Swedish and French tanks hard and hit bombers in air hard universally. They vastly improved this last year and since then, it's not easy to turn a loss and impossible with premium, so it's way more comfortable, but the economy as a driving force to how much you can play the stuff you want to play is anti-consumer.
  • As a similar point, battle rating (vehicle balance metric) is decided more or less purely on algorithms with no other context which makes a lot of recursive BR changes purely nonsensical. We got to the point where identical tanks in different nations were at different BRs because certain nations did better with them than others. A lot of recent BR changes are completely nonsensical, with very blatant problem vehicles being ignored by the devs due to the stats not lining up with the players' voices. In this kind of game, devs should be listening to the players and not just relying on the algorithm.

Overall - the game is fine. It's more than playable. You can enjoy it a lot even. However, you really do just have to know what you are getting. When you just accept that the game will always be partially what it is, and you play different things as the BRs make some stuff bad and some stuff good, you play different nations and learn different tanks and playstyles, take breaks when the game gets dull and come back when you want, then one can absolutely sink 10,524.3 hours into War Thunder. If you expect something that the game is not, or expect complete overhaul, then you will never like the game. It is for this reason that my review is still negative, but my play time will still increase.

Would I recommend this game? Hell to the ♥♥♥♥ to the yeah I would. It is just so well made.
As some who sees a future in the military, this gives you a feel of what being a squaddie is like.

Pros:
-great graphics
-max settings and getting a solid 170- 18fps; on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ R7 250 too!
-tactical as ♥♥♥♥
-scopes on assault rifles
-a Source game... Wi-with ironsights? Unheard of!
-forces teamwork, and it works!
-no furious Russians
-great atmosphere on a 4 man Hunt game
-dedicated grenade throws - once you pull the pin, you better lob that ♥♥♥♥ or in 4 seconds it blows up in your hand
-realistic damage model - 1 shot hs from all ranges, 1-3 shot body but varies depending on the weapon (i.e.a shotgun can't be a sniper rifle)
-mods. Need casings? Mod. Realistic sound? Mod. M40 Asiimov? Mod. Turn security into hentai grils? Mods!
-co op; the right way to play.
-easy to get the hang of if you're an FPS or TS vet (30 hours and got such a good KDR (like +2.5)

Cons:
-Quirky animations. Still.
-Awkward team collision (but come on, team collision in most games is awkward)
-meh player models
-meh weapon models
-no casings from rounds
-SO MANY KEY BINDINGS
-PvP = dead instantly
-steep, and I mean STEEP, learning curve
-hard to be majorly pro
-not many servers for my favourite maps any more :/

All in all, a really great and massively underrated game. It has so much atmosphere on a small map that you feel like a veteran in Iraq fighting the Taliban or ISIS and I love it so much!!
