NMRiH used to be a realistic zombie survival horror game with classic vanilla servers and a little to no imbalanced or buggy custom maps in 2013 and 2014, but at around late 2015 or early 2016 scores of custom maps started to pop up along with out-of-place character models and game-ruining mechanics just like what you said in ZPS.
This phenomenon occurs to many free Source Engine games today since Source Engine is easily modifiable and runs flawlessly smooth on most PCs nowadays, and of course none of these problems are the developers fault, it's the players who changed the game.
I'm a late player of ZPS so I'm pretty disappointed to see that there's only few vanilla servers left in this game, you're a lucky one IMO for you started to play as early as 2008 to experience the classic gameplay back then, as for myself, well... I'm just too late.
