It's definitely not perfect, but it's fundamentals are fun. This game gets a lot of heat for lack of updates and a poorly executed live service ecosystem, but at it's core, it's enjoyable. Astonishingly, this is the very first Halo I've every played, and it's definitely got a lot going for it. Here's to hoping 343i really nails season 2!

Really hooking me in. Just beginning the game (Level 14) and it looks like the game's pay wall isn't very high. I've been offered a $5 "one time" starter pack and have been given lots of opportunites to just play the free to play content.

Mobile games around this genre of play have usually shown their hand with their paywall by this time, so I'm curious to see how forgiving the game will be to F2P players.

Way burned out from MMOs but this one hits the right notes for the most part.

I prefer FPS view personally, but the game is playable both 3rd and 1st person.

After almost 11 hours of game play, I have a nearly-level 20 Assault frame. First 10 levels goes quickly, like within the first 2 hours quickly, so the next 10 were surprisingly slow.

If you're big in to the RPG/Loot system of today's "modern" massive gameplay titles (Borderlands, Destiny, etc etc) you'll be very disappointed. I've replaced my main weapon on my Assault frame twice. At level 17 I was still using a level 6 weapon. I've replaced my secondary four times, but it was swapping between two types of rifle modes, burst or auto.

Because the gear system is so shallow in the first 20 levels (not sure if it gets better), be prepared for a lot of monotonous gameplay. Your abilities aren't good enough to use as soon as they're off cooldown. You are forced to use them in close range, making you take way more damage than you otherwise would, so often times you're just spamming six shots, reloading, spamming six shots, reloading.

Leveling and going through missions is VERY typical of an MMO. In firefall, they take that typical mission gameplay and they make it even more repetitive. You'll visit the same spot for 5-6 different missions. In the level 20 area, you'll be forced to climb an obnoxiously tall mountain to essentially play "errand boy" and be forced to glide down to get another mission just to go back where you were. It's INSANELY repetitive to the point of frustrating.

So why am I recommending this? Why does this game hit the "right notes"? I played 8 hours with a friend and that's where the game shines. Tag teaming fights, helping each other out, even trying to beat each other to mission checkpoints based on who could jetpack better or fly the longest on a glider was more fun than the actual missions being presented.

Despite the monotonous gear and "kill this, fetch that" mission type, the game is still incredibly addictive and fun. Getting to level 40 on one frame, just to start over on another frame, I suspect, will get old very fast.

If you're a big MMO fan, this game will be right up your alley. If you're sick of MMOs and love RPGs or FPS games, this might be worth a try, but expect a lot of the same MMO shortfalls.
