64 Hours played
Just completed my first run of early access, after having played maybe a dozen runs of 30XX's demo. I can say with confidence that Batterystaple has given us a X-like that offers enormous improvements over 20XX, and that's a title I sunk around 100 hours in. The music, the variety of level templates, the augment system, the boss fights, all of it are just fantastic. If you were a fan of the Mega Man X series, this is an easy buy.

If your're new to this type of game, I'd still recommend it. 30XX is fast-paced, with tight platforming and challenging level designs. The bosses cycle though multiple attack patterns during their fights, some of which are only unlocked if you reach them at higher ranks; stage progression is randomized, meaning the boss you fight at the start of one run might not be seen until stage six in a different run. This forces you to adapt your strategy to fit with when you're facing the boss and what augments you've unlocked to that point.

Passive augments range from straightforward stat boosts (including speed and jump height, which can really change how you approach a level) to fundamental changes in the way your powers work (for example, one aug makes your shots arc like mortars). A special type of aug are called cores; these are equippables that change how your powers work in dramatic ways, like giving you two charged shots or allowing you to hover for a few seconds. The wide range of augs means you'll be able to build your character to play in very different ways across different runs, but it also means you'll learn to be flexible and adapt your playstyle depending on which augs you come across in your run.

The chiptune soundtrack, imo, is fantastic. If it had appeared in the 16-bit days, it would be as fondly remembered as any of the early Mega Man or Street Fighter soundtracks. Both levels and boss fights have their own themes, the latter of which really up the energy level of the fights.

The X-series was one of my favourites as a kid. It's obvious that the folks at Batterystaple feel the same, but they have't just built a homage; 30XX stands on its own merits as an innovative and challenging title. I strongly recommend it.
