My first Elder Scrolls game was Skyrim, which captivated me in its frozen lands for longer than I’d like to admit. So, without the lens of nostalgia, I’ll say this: Morrowind might be the best in the series, at least in terms of immersion. There’s a depth to its religions, a mythopoetic richness that I haven’t encountered in any other game. The fauna and flora of Vvardenfell awakened a biologist in me I didn’t even know existed, and the architecture of the settlements is strikingly original, masterfully reflecting the identity of each faction.

Amazing ethos. Fantastic lore.

That said, the combat system, in my opinion, hasn’t aged well. The hit-chance mechanic, in a first-person game that often feels like an FPS, just doesn’t work. And no mod truly fixes this without disrupting your character’s progression. Most of the time, whether facing a rat or a daedra, I felt tempted to abandon my playthrough.

If you’re playing Morrowind in 2024, I highly recommend using OpenMW, an open-source engine that will greatly improve your experience. If you're a veteran of the game and enjoyed exploring the lands of Vvardenfell, look into Tamriel Rebuilt — an extraordinary mod that expands the game world tremendously.

This game is fantastic! The developers' inspiration from classic RPGs is clear.

Much like Planescape: Torment, death in this game has meaning — there's no reloading, but rather a system and universe that thoughtfully weave your experiences into the narrative. Your character may die, but they return in a way that’s fully integrated into the story.

Svarog's Dream draws from a rich tradition while crafting something uniquely its own. It definitely deserves more recognition.
