With something to offer for every player archetype; Rocket League is good, clean fun for all ages. It's mainly a team-based game and, as such, is often much more fun with friends and/or when played with players of a similar skill level. I also recommend a controller over mouse-and-keyboard as it's primarily a driving game, but that's all preference.

I started as the humblest casual many moons ago, but I've outgrown most of my friends in skill and have found myself subject to the chaos of public matchmaking. So I believe I can give an accurate depiction of most levels of play in this game, excepting the highest tiers. But there's plenty of content on that lying around if you decide to go deep in Rocket League.

Firstly, if you're typically a more casual player in games, the game can be incredibly fun with or without friends. I'd certainly recommend you stick to the "Casual" queue, as the lower tiers of "Ranked" are full of higher-ranked "smurfs" and toxic individuals. I do also recommend some time in (Training -> Free Play) to learn the controls before your first game, as they take a bit of getting used to.

If you aspire to greatness, I highly recommend you follow this path: Learn from skilled players and/or content creators while you practice in free play, training packs, and casual games. Consider learning popular button configurations from tutorial videos before you form bad habits. Be patient in learning a toolbox of simple maneuvers for offense, defense, and movement. If you put just a few days into watching videos and practicing what you learn until you can do it without thinking about it, your first ten games will likely put you out of range of most of the incredibly toxic individuals.

Speaking of which... Ranked. Well, as anyone who's played a lick of competitive online multiplayer in virtually any such game can attest, some people can be a little toxic. If you can easily sidestep these players, and "take the L" when inevitable; the game can still be quite enjoyable, even when played with utterly random individuals. If not, please; make friends, learn to mute peeps, or avoid these competitive multiplayer game modes entirely. The Report function in this game can be (and is) used to great effect, and many of the more toxic players I've reported have been disciplined. Myself included, when appropriate Kudos to the development team for doing a great job in combating the issue.

Matchmaking can seem a little inaccurate, especially at non-peak hours. A run of especially poor teammates (sometimes the queue will even match you together with the same guys in two or three consecutive games!) can be devastating to a player's rank, and force them to play a stretch of games with inevitably lesser-skilled teammates to return to their proper position.

For instance: As a player solidly placing mid-range Platinum in the past seasons with slightly-lacking mechanics but a very calculated and supportive play-style, it can be very difficult for me to win games where I'm trusting teammates who literally whiff more than they connect on simple touches. I often feel unable to make a play, as I won't even double-commit on a ball let alone triple-commit every time I want to have an impact but my teammates are tunnel-vision-ball-chasing. I don't have the skill (yet) to reliably run away with a game alone against Golds, so I can often sit for days in Gold III Div 2-4 while I wait for a run of skilled teammates or fortuitous bounces. Honestly it's hard to avoid this phenomenon without either choosing your teammates or improving towards the top levels, and impossible to blame it on development; but it is a frustration nonetheless.

QQ aside, I do highly recommend this game to all people of all walks. It's affordable and flexible, and great as a gift. I've dropped it on family members who have all reached different tiers of skill, but have all enjoyed the game for what it is:

An ingeniously simple yet complex blend of familiar activities. A playground for all, and a stage for potentially mesmerizing greatness.

I've owned Rocket League since a few months after release, and have played it through countless cycles of blockbuster game releases. Hands down my favorite Steam purchase of all time.
