Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a love letter to JRPGs simply put.

The main combat of this game is so satisfying. There are not a lot of turn-based RPGs with real time inputs, with mainstream titles such as Like A Dragon, Paper Mario and South Park and I wish there was more of them. And although I still enjoy turn-based RPGs without said real time inputs, the immediate feedback of nailing that QTE and parrying every single attack is so satisfying.

The game’s story is also pretty solid that kept me captivated. A lot of emotional moments, shocking moments and surprisingly funny moments. I guess it’s a bit of fresh air, as most JRPGs usually have anime-esque tropes that people would find cringe (although I do still love me some anime)

The music is probably my favourite aspect of this game. I didn’t expect to hear so many bangers as the main appeal to this game was the combat. Nearly every single battle theme is a banger with my personal favourite obviously being Every Renoir Theme Whatever it wins at The Game Awards, it better win Best Soundtrack.

The only negative gameplay aspect which everyone seems to agree with is the navigation. There is no mini-map, which for lore reasons does make sense, but I got lost so many times, mostly times when I defeat an enemy, the camera points in the opposite direction and I go back where I started.

Story Spoilers: And the story does start to fall a bit flat towards the end, as some characters get neglected over others as the story shifts at the end of Act II.

It’s definitely my front runner for GOTY and with games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Metaphor: ReFantazio receiving critical acclaim in recent years, it's not the return of turn-based RPGs, they simply never left.

Cobalt Core is probably one of the most charming roguelikes I've played.

The characters and story are at times cheesy, but in a fun and charming way. I love their interactions with each other and the enemies as well. The soundtrack is amazing, with personal favourites being Gravity Well, Polytrope and of course Self-Defense. The gameplay is fun and refreshing, with movement being a key mechanic in the game and enough variety of characters and ships to feel like I have to use different tactics with each combination.

The main complaint which everyone else has is the lack of content. In some runs, I wish I could spend more time with my overpowered decks, as I only really get to use those decks to their fullest potential in 1 or 2 fights before the run is over. (I do appreciate this game being easy to get 100% achievements on lol.)

Do I see myself playing this for hundreds of hours? Probably not. Maybe if they add more content.

Did I enjoy the 21 hours I had playing this game? Absolutely.
