Edit: I was able to beat the first three stages consecutively (and after 2 tries the forth) on apocalypse 1 without ever needing to grind for meta upgrades. The meta upgrades act to help make the game easier, not to make it possible. If you complete every stage in one try, you will have enough meta upgrades to finish the entire game. If you struggled with these stages, theres a difficulty system that allows you to make the game as easy, or as hard as you want and will make it easy to beat without ever needing to farm. Those saying that its "hard gated by upgrades and hours of farming" chose to ignore the games difficulty system out of pride and would rather cry about how the game is too hard than admit that they themselves struggled. Probably the same people that keep saying melee weapons are bad.

TLDR If you have a fragile ego, you might not have fun
