If you have seen the HBO series Deadwood, this game is like a saloon simulator of that series. Starts with just a featureless dirt road and an empty saloon but pretty soon people settle down and open businesses close by. There's a social side of this where you can befriend them, rob them, spy on them and blackmail them etc. It's like a mix some Sims, business simulators a bit of Banished and with some RPG elements.

Looks very promising.

The way I instinctively put up a kung fu stance the moment I saw my first opponent made it pretty obvious that I must have been a ninja or at least a street fighter in a previous life. I'm gonna need a bigger room to unleash the full potential of my karate chops

Plays out similar to Thrill of the fight but far more comedy to it because you try to act like a kung fu fighter when fighting.. As an added bonus, it's just as fun for other people watching you kata your way around the room, at least if you remain outside of karate chop range.

A game with the most dense fog of VOIP trolling you'll ever encounter, but with a player base of like-minded passionate trolls that somehow makes it all a feature.

When the mighty emperor of the Byzantine Empire in the late 900's started hearing rumours of a growing army of fierce cannibalistic tree-huggers led by perticulary handsome herculean bodied giant albino geniuses emerging from the depths of Africa to conquer Constantinople and all of the lands, he had a good laugh and was amused by the strange joke.

His didn't laugh when he was later served to victorious hungry soldiers who feasted on him in the courts of Constantinople, but at least his grandchildren and the people of what used to be the Byzantine Empire learned to respect the trees and eat humans like normal people.

Bought the game blissfully unaware that they would later remove content and start to follow Communist Chinese censorship laws(!) Greed over reason.

(Will change to positive if content is restored.)

EDIT:

The game is excellent.

Early Access Review
At its best, Blackwake is one of the funniest games I've ever played. I personally prefer those moments where you have a crew with a good sense of humor than to just win the round. With such a crew, it doesn't even matter if your ship is sinking and everything is going down the drain, You'll laugh loudly in the process and have the time of your life. These moments have been fairly common to me while playing, but it all comes down to using the mic yourself and at least let out a "yaaar" once in a while.

You don't have to be social in Blackwake, and it's possible to play the game without the use of a microphone. but the game is made with communication in mind so it's a must if you want to get the full experience. Other players are mostly happy as long as you're able to tell your crew that you need supplies downstairs, follow captains orders and basic stuff like that.

To be somewhat effective in this game, you really need a captain that knows what they're doing and a crew that are willing to do the orders they bark out. Playing as a crew member you'll be spending your time scouting for eneny ships, firing and reloading cannons and repairing the ship, sails and killing erupting fire with buckets of water..The tasks are simple but when those cannonballs start flying through your ship and you run around working those holes, you'll be thankful for the simplicity, because it can get pretty intense, at least with a headset. There's also the possibility of locking down enemy ships with grappling hooks to finish it off and the other way around. Ths is where your weapons get useful

Playing as the captain of a ship is different and in some sense more challenging than crew member. You'll need some ability to manage multiple people and tell them what to do and when to do it. And you MUST have a microphone and the will to use it if/when playing as captain on populated servers. Nobody likes a silent captain. Good captains keep the crew informed about their actions in time for the crew to be prepared and ready..

You'll spend most of your time in one position steering the ship in position to fire the broadside cannons on the enemy as well as evading incoming threats by staying out of their range and the angle of their devastating broadside cannons. This is the easy part. The real challenge isn't that or the enemy ships, it's your crew and how you manage it. The difference between firing off a full broadside at the right moment and individual cannons firing off cannonballs at their own convenience is the difference between winning a round or losing it. Take control and demand respect. Your crew should only fire the cannons when you say so.

It's a type of game I jump in and out of for an hour or two rather than a game I play for full evenings and nights, but I fully recommend this game for its simple yet amazing gameplay and hilarious approach.

(I've bought this game at least twice before I bought it on Steam, so the registered playing time here on Steam is not representable.)

Many people claim to have played this game just because it's a highly regarded classic. The best way to find out if it's true, is to ask them if they felt Call of Pripyat came with a sufficient level of cheeki breeki.

Nobody should be unaware at this point, but if you somehow still haven't played this chapter of the FPS-bible, worry not! The cheeki breeki is prominent. Some might say with an extra scoop.

On less important features, if you are new to the series and consider buying one of them on a Steam sale, this is the S.T.A.L.K.E.R game with the most up-to-date graphics and the best one.

Probably the best game-wise purchase of my life.

November 2017: Still best game-wise purchase of my life.
