Disclaimer; just to be clear, I did in fact receive this game as a gift from one of my friends, who is one of the developers, about two years ago when it was in alpha-ish/beta-ish testing. This review however disregards that bias, and is simply my thoughts and reactions to the game as it is for now, and will be updated as time goes on, reflecting any changes in opinion.

As of the first writing of this review, I have less than an hour of play time in, however, my first impressions are that this game is in fact well thought-out as far as how certain things work, and can be expanded upon, and it's just different enough that it has alot of potential. The camera control are a bit 'wonky' at first, compared to other similarly-oriented games (camera-angle-wise), especially other third-person zombie games. It's pretty easy though, once you get used to the controls.

The tutorial they've set up is actually quite in-depth compared to other zed games I've played, and informative enough to get you started. Possibly even ***too*** in-depth; adding an option for "basic tutorial" and"full tutorial" might even be in order! lolz..

I see a TON of people try to compare this to several other games; Zomboid, 7DTD, and a few others keep getting mentioned in particular. What people need to realize before purchasing/playing this game, is that is not *any of those games*, nor based off them. It has elements from those other games for sure, but the devs have made this their own game, independent of those others. Trying to compare this game to others will always make it feel like it falls short if you try to compare it to your favorite features in other games, and this one doesn't have it. Word of advice? If you like zed survival games and decide to try this one out; start playing it with no expectations, and pretend like you've never played other zed survival games before - it'll help you enjoy this one alot more, without the comparisons.

Anyways, all of the above said, there'll be more review to come, as I play it more.

...til next time

Over 1700 hours in this game, and every play-through still brings a fresh new experience. The absolute plethora of mods available make the possibilities for this game even more endless as well, including everything from mods that are super-cheaty, all the way to "sneeze the wrong way and you're dead" type of difficulty. The seemingly synchronous nature between us modders (yes, I'm a little biased, because I make several mods for this game) and the game devs is truly remarkable, with game updates and features bouncing back and forth from being a mod, to being part of the base game. Tons of mods that correct base game issues, but in non-malicious nor insulting ways. Hell, the devs have even hired several modders over the years as official developers; that's not a very common thing to happen. Additionally, the devs provide modding tools to us as well, which few studios do. The responsiveness and listening to feedback from players too, is superb, and I wish more dev studios did this.

All in all, it's not just the game itself, but the modding community, player-base, support and feedback system, etc.. The greater community as a whole, and everything that goes into Zomboid... It ll comes together and makes what at first glance appears to be a decade old game with graphics from the 2000's, turn into something amazing, that just keeps getting better and better as time goes on, unlike so many other games.

I honestly can;t recommend this game enough, for almost any kind of player. It has most everything; from builder style game-play, to farming and scavenging, the ability to even simply turn off zeds and just survive on extremely low resources, all the way to the other end, turning loot to the lowest setting and cranking up the zed spawns, seeing how long you can survive, and how many zeds you can eradicate, before succumbing to them.. This game covers so many play styles it's hard to find someone that wouldn't enjoy at least one small aspect of it.

A little over 500 hours in, and I'm still hooked on this game. To be fair I presumed I would enjoy it to begin with, since I play alot of games that are either completely about building of planning like this one, or at least have building options, like Zomboid.

That said, I thought I would get bored, but that isn't the case at all! I'm not speed running the game, but I'm also not deliberately going slowly; I've watching plenty of others that are essentially expert level, like ImKibitz and TotalXclipse, to learn how to advance through various parts, make more slefficient layouts, etc. But even so, I've only just finished unlocking through tier 4, working on phase 2 parts! Sure, I've burned through a few dozen restarts, as I learned better ways and places to start, and deciding each time it would be easier to start over than to tear down the whole world lolz..

If you're someone that loves building games, or in this case, essentially a very graphic spreadsheet simulator.. This game is for you!

If you don't really care for math, planning, or building.. you likely won't enjoy this game as much as I have.

To be transparent I did only buy this because it was on like 75% off sale at one point, but knowing what I know now, I would even purchase it at full price; I firmly believe it's worth it.

With a very large amount of time in this game, I can honestly say that for an early access game, it often doesn't feel like it's one! There are of course the occasional bug here and there, and in some places the game very much shows it is incomplete. That being said, what the game has so far, is nothing short of praiseworthy, considering such a small team, made such an amazing start to a game. I would highly suggest it, or more accurately, I have been suggesting it, and will continue to do so for as long as the game stays in the top-tier level it's at currently. This game has the potential to be something timeless in nature, and with the developers acceptance (not support, mind you) of modding being a part of this games community, it has already flourished drastically, and I look forward to seeing it continue that trend.
