A fantastic RTS, uniquely made with an amazing conversion from the 2D realm. Just about infinite replayability with the user made maps feature. A real gem.

I've changed my review for the game to a thumbs up.

Initially when I posted my original review as a downvote it was because a cashshop was added, at the time I figured this would just be a way for them to milk the community but seeing all the content they have added to the game I feel it's warranted to support these developers, this is a truly marvelous game and it's just getting better with age.

Highly recommend it for a chill, vib relaxing builder.

I bought into Subnautica around the end of 2015 and followed it through development playing through the entire game every time a new major content update/build was released. Every playthrough was fantastic, even when buggy or unfinished, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the unfinished lost river and lava castle zones. Then to see them entirely fleshed out and completed was a very satisfying thrill.

The game offers a sense of mystery and wonder that is rarely captured these days. The menus are solid, the animations are crisp, the graphics are uniquely stylized for the universe and look outstanding. The story is interesting but not overly lore heavy. Some may find it a bit heavy on sci-fi trope, but there is enough variety and unique things to it to separate it from your average run-of-the-mill storylines. It left me wanting to explore more of the story after finishing the game and learning more about the precursors and the human history of the timeline.

I really enjoyed following Unknown World's development progress and task management on Trello and am still enjoying watching the development of the next expansion. This is early access done right, there are 100 other games out there that could (and should) follow this pattern. It was worth the wait ladies and gentlemen.

Tried it out on free weekend for a few hours.

Pretty much what I thought it would be. Game lacks the depth and sincerity of the previous titles. There is a huge emphasis on flashy graphics and big explosions and a lack of interesting mechanics. It plays very much like a StarCraft-esque RTS game with 40k pasted on top. The campaign so far isn't quite as good as I was hoping, I'd rather play one race for 15 missions instead of all three for 3-4 each.

The animations, sounds and attacks just don't have the same *THUD* powerful feeling as in the previous games either. It just doesn't feel as visceral as it used to. I haven't seen any vignettes as well, these provides awesome little cinematic moments during the gunfire, fury and violence of the previous games. Angelos killing a blood thirster while the battle raged around him.. fantastic, but these types of small one unit vs one unit embellishments are not part of DoW3 from what I can tell and that is a sad loss to the immersion of the game.

Unit customization.. this is big, it was important to translate the table top rules into a video game and maintain at least some core of what makes the table top war-game so awesome. In DoW 3 if you want a marine squad you get a 5 man marine squad that can take a flamer upgrade or plasma upgrade. That's it. No sergeant, no standard bearer, no attaching hero units - that's it. All the customization now is done in an "elites" section (which coincidentally the game focuses a lot on). The models, textures and effects are top notch but the substance just doesn't feel there with these units. They have very limited ability customization, zero equipment customization unlike in DoW2 and they have no wargear unlocks to watch your hero grow in capability as in Soulstorm/Dark Crusade. They just feel like hollow AOE button bags you can deploy every so often during your game.

This would be a great game if it weren't for the legacy it's coming from, maybe folks who don't know any better or like the frantic micromanage hell that some RTS games provide would like this. It's a strange, somewhat disappointing departure from Dawn of War. Hopefully there is a 4th and they can go back to their roots.

Microtransactions and a paid currency to sell mod content?

The cash grabs in modern day gaming are becoming ridiculous.

I paid for the game, the season pass and now you want more money for mods? MODS. This is getting silly.

2205 is a lot different than 2070. They have basically removed a lot of the tedium from 2070, but some of that tedium was good substance too. I loved setting up ships/trade routes to move goods on individual maps, I thought that was ridiculously immersive. I do miss that.

The game is quick to play and learn and drop in to. Sometimes it does feel simplistic, but sometimes simplistic is nice too. I wouldn't judge this against 2070, 2070 is a better resource management game. A better production game. 2205 is fun too though. In its own right it's got a lot going for it. It's beautiful for one, it runs GREAT. I love playing on the moon. I'm enjoying developing every island and achievement hunting. Also setting up profitable trade deals is quite fun and easy to get going as is the stock market/corp system. I'm still trying to wrap my head around Orbit, but I think I've got a decent handle it on it, not my most favorite minigame though.

Some things I would have liked to have seen in the game include:
  • A decent tutorial system
  • Manually set up trade routes between individual island warehouses on the same map (2070 style)
  • Some more variety in the quests you're given.
  • More customization over your combat units and more varied/interesting combat. I do miss the defense building and ships from 2070.
  • Orbit could have used a nice little tutorial system and more impactful structures. I feel also that overall out of all the DLC, Orbit is missing a lot of the detail and shine of the other content in the game. It feels a little rushed and flat.

Some things I really love:
  • The graphics
  • The absolute sheer unbridled amount of detail packed into literally EVERYTHING it's amazing guys great job!
  • The moonscape is perfect!!!
  • The combat is fast paced and visceral - explosions everywhere.
  • ONE faction to play for each climate type. This was one of my most annoyed at things in the previous (and especially 2070) Anno games.
  • The individual factions being in different climates really makes sense and helps the game not feel bogged down with a multitude of buildings.
  • The ease of placing public structures (not a huge number you have to cluster your houses around)
  • Being able to move strctures after you've constructed them (yay for the future).

Get it while it's on sale for sure, it's a steal. Full price is a bit much IMO, which is why I waited for the sale.
