This is a very bizarre entry in the Myst franchise. Uru drops the first person phantom "Stranger" of the other Myst games and actually has you make an avatar. That's because this game was supposed to be an MMO, but due to weird deployment tech, this game just functions as a single player game. The MMO version is still available, and it's free! ( http://mystonline.com/en/play/ )

But how does this game hold up? Well...it's different. They didn't really realize just how much the change to 3D realtime movement would affect world traversal (turns out point and click is very efficient). So you end up with a few ages that have a loooooot of running around just to get to the main attraction. Luckily, for one major offender in particular, there's some pretty good conveyance on where to go, so you shouldn't feel like you're missing anything because you failed to explore every nook and cranny.

The actual gameplay is "Find the thing," there are seven(?) buttons (of a sort) which need to be pressed in each age to complete the age. This part is actually executed very well, as they act as checkpoints and are typically locked behind each major puzzle. So if you become stumped, you can leave, check out another zone, and come back fresh.

As for the actual puzzles, they're actually some of the best AND worst in the series. There are only a few puzzles utilizing the newfound 3D powers Uru offers, and those are nearly all terrible. But the traditional logic puzzles? Excellent. Uru actually boasts my all time favorite puzzle in the series. Just buckle in for the reverse Myst logic you'll have to utilize at the end of Kadish.

As for the art style, I always felt that Uru was a bit of a departure. I know that D'ni was always this sprawling city in the lore, but to me it was always just a big circular prison at the end of Myst, so it was weird to me that we'd be exploring some sort of "cavern" nonsense. It's been a long time selling me on this game, but I think the environments and atmosphere of this game have really stuck with me, possibly even in ways that I didn't notice. The soundtrack is alright, Jack Wall and Robyn Miller have brought a lot more to the table in the previous entries, but Tim Larkin brings a very unique voice to the series, and honestly? It's perfect. The instrumentation is alien and mysterious, and while a few tracks fall through the cracks, this game offers some of the greatest pieces of music I've heard in a video game.

Some quick technical notes, this game doesn't run in widescreen natively (although UruLive does). I think you can find a WS hack.

So if you like Myst and are comfortable with making the occasionally awkward switch to 3D and adding to the Myst universe an unusual take on the existing lore, give this a shot. It's definitely a strong Myst game, although it may not feel it at first.

Phew, what a game. I actually preferred this to Obduction, and I was a backer for that game. Let me first just say that Quern has the strongest 1st hour of any game I think I've ever played. The pacing and conveyance is water-tight, and it certainly doesn't fall apart after that, but it does get bogged down somewhat due to the inventory (which becomes a little bloated at one point). But while Quern is basically Myst + Inventory puzzles, *most* of the inventory puzzles are clever or obvious. I won't say every single puzzle is perfect, because there's about 50 of them, so there's bound to be one or two "meh" puzzles here, but they are all fair.

On difficulty, I'd say this is right between Riven and Exile. I completed no puzzle wondering how the walkthrough figured it out, but I certainly did refer to a walkthrough a few times just to make sure I was on the right track.

I would recommend this game without reservation to fans of Myst. If you're new to these games, allow for one or two minor puzzles to feel "cheap," that's par for the course in these games. Still, 2 out of 50~ ain't bad at all.

UPDATE: Second Playthrough
This may be my favorite game of all time. It's really really really good. If you're on the fence, then please do yourself a favor and buy this game. All the puzzles are excellent and they have since updated the game to add a number of helpers. None of these push the game too far into easy terrority and essentially just serve to add an additional level of conveyance. This game is a prime example of video games as art. It's classy, it's brilliantly thought out, it's gorgeous, it's most certainly the best game I've played in a very long time, and EASILY the best in it's genre.

Jesus H Christ is this game amazing. Easily the greatest FPS I've ever played. Fast and fluid combat mechanics, super tense encounters, and wildly satisfying gibs. Hopefully this game marks the end of the uninspired cover shooter, the forced-narrative driven games, and the 10 year long fetish for the Marine Corps.

Onto the details, the difficulty curve is one of the absolutely most linear (that's good) I've ever seen in a game. It's a gradual increase and the game manages to foreshadow the next enemy to be introudced in a very natural way. And speaking of the enemies, they're as well designed as they ever have been. Each enemy has its own unique set of mechanics and weaknesses. They all have special ways of being disembowled as well, so that's a plus.

Encounters usually come in three flavors: hallways, multiplayer-esque arenas, and boss fights, and they all manage to hold their own and be memorable. The boss fights are particularly fantastic though, sporting WoW-like boss mechanics that require you to really be paying attention to the environment as well as shooting the big bad guy in the head.

Any negatives this game has are HEAVILY overcompensated by the positives. If I were to list a few though, it would be that it still indulges in the occassional slightly long cutscene or scripted sequence, the talent trees are neat but kinda boring (armor talents in particular), fairly lengthy load times, and lack of blast beats in the death metal/electronic score.

Note that you do need a pretty good rig to run this properly (this game REALLY needs to be played at 60+ fps) and I had to turn everything to low to keep it around 60 when the ♥♥♥♥ hit the fan. I'm on a GTX760, i7-3400 and 8gigs of RAM for reference.

So if you can run it, you need this game. This ♥♥♥♥ should be as ubiquitous on Steam as Portal and Half-Life 2.

After playing this and then Outcast immediately after, I can safely say that I will be returning this title again and not Outcast. Jedi Academy's lightsaber combat is nuanced and satisfying. The locations are interesting and the soundtrack is classic John Williams. Both hardcore fans and people who are vaguely aware of Star Wars should really enjoy this game, the missions are varied and the combat is tight and dynamic.

I've played all the Myst games multiple times and just got around to completing this one. What took me so long? Well, I was pretty apprehensive. Hardcore fans of the series tend to dismiss this game, but my apprehension was misplaced as I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Pros:
-Very clever puzzles
-Gorgeous Zones
-Amazing Atmosphere
-Puzzles are incredibly rewarding
-Creative story, interesting characters
-Multiple endings

Cons:
-Cheesy (Less than 4 but moreso than 3)
-Not super difficult, about on par with Exile
-Tablet mechanics can be buggy/frustrating/annoying
-Acceptable but otherwise unmemorable soundtrack (whereas the other games have stellar soundtracks)
-Quite short (ties into the difficulty)

Most puzzles here are very fair and some are downright brilliant (Parts of Noloben and all of Todelmer and Laki'ahn), but as mentioned eariler the new tablet mechanic can be quite confusing and clumsy. However, this game is still definitely worth your time if you are a fan of the Myst series. If you're new to the series, I'd suggest any of the other entries before this one, but it's definitely a solid entry to the series.

This game is incredibly stressful...which means that it's doing a damn good job. Phenomenal story and an even better presentation. The game hooked me within the first five minutes. The pacing is great and I only ever stopped playing because I was freaking out or because I didnt realize that it was 5am. There are a few bugs but none of them affect gameplay. Definitely recommended.

This game is brilliant. Totally genius. The mechanics are simple but the depth is outrageous. This game literally puts everything in your hands and the game is limited only by your skill Hilarious voice overs and script in the single player, awesome multiplayer modes, and a supremely crafted core mechanic. Pick it up.

This series flawlessly executes the damn near impossible. It creates a slightly darker yet still highly recognizable Star Wars universe set many years after Episode 6. I wish we had more games like this. The tone and style is absolutely beautiful and fresh while still staying true to the original material. It revisits classic scenes and expands them into an enormous level while still creating a fresh environment with surprises around every corner. Highly highly highly recommended.

!PORT WARNING! This is a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ port. Controls are bearable, but not by much. The concepts here are really cool though, and it's presented very effectively. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for an intelligent, slower paced game.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is this game something. It's actually not fun. Not at all. It's really great though. The game really makes you feel awful about what you're doing. It's essentially the RTS equivalent of a shooter that shows you the finest moments in the life of the guy that you just murdered.
