Early Access Review
Yeah, don't believe anything the videos and screenshots show you.

This game sells itself as a base builder/looter shooter with STALKER elements but in reality is just an unfinished flash game.

1. Map(s)
First off, there is no big singular map. There are just 5 smaller maps, 2 of which you can play at the beginning. These 2 maps are exactly the same only that 1 of them is filled with radiated cars. To get to one of these maps you need to talk to the conductor which brings you there.

2. Loading times
This brings me to the loading times. These are way to long for a 2D game. Especially because when you die in the field you are reset back to the base where you have to talk to the conductor again to load a new map. It's not a hassle the first time, but in a game where death is quite common, you're gonna notice.

3. Balancing
The balancing is atrocious. You will die in 2-3 hits, enemies 6-7. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if I was just reset back to where I started the map. Actually going out to scavenge for stuff is useless. I extracted my last run and the game told me I lost money by going out to explore. Vendors will sell stuff 10 times the price you get for that item. Healing back to full health costs a fortune, etc.

4. Nitpicks
The game feels empty. Of course, this fits the theme it's going for. Only music I've heard is in the menu screen. You can't loot stuff like you would expect. For example all the cars on the second map aren't loot-able. Only stuff you can find is protected by enemies or radiation.

They say that the maps are randomly generated but that is only half true. The map is the same every time but the building placement and train tracks randomise every time. Even then, it doesn't differ that much from the run before. Also, the extreme gunplay and shooting? It's mostly a walking simulator.

I haven't played much, but it scratches an itch I've been looking for for quite a while. I don't really recommend it right now, maybe in the future.

For a 30 euro game there should be more. I can already see that this game isn't going to be longer than 10 hours. The difficulty choices are really weird too. Survivalist is a permadeath mode for some reason? Once you die you reset back to the start of the game which is really really weird.

I followed this game for some time and I expected something else. For a story driven game the voice acting is extremely underwhelming. Namely the lack of any emotion in the main characters' voice. Some lines are just flat out cringy with their delivery. I'm talking about Camus and William here.
There is also a lack of any interesting gameplay atleast for me. I don't find flying from A to B all the time that intriguing.

There is very little choice in what you can do in terms of story. There are almost no choices and none of the characters feel interesting or well thought out.

However, the atmosphere is amazing and the music is superb. Such a shame really.

I just feel like Taleworlds thought too hard and grand about this game. Really what players only wanted was an overhauled version of Warband with more features. 8 years and we get a broken early access game that isn't up to par. Hey, I only gave up after the 5th invisible enemy killed me!

And for those saying that "B-b-but it's early access" shush. This unfinished game is being sold at AAA retail price so they will get the critique they well deserve.

Wait until the game is finished really.

Still as wide as an ocean but as deep as a puddle.

This game is a perfect example of why you shouldn't let everything up to a computer.

Don't get me wrong, the game is pretty fun but the developers haven't thought about balancing and difficulty. A trend that is pretty common around indie games.

The procedural generation in this game doesn't think about the layout of a level. This leads to corners that are way to sharp for the speed that you are currently going, Jumps that are not perfectly straight and bumps in front of big jumps. All this leads to a pretty meh experience in my opinion. The levels also feel really samey because the system just picks pre made pieces and sticks them together.

I joined a room of another player that was playing on the Glaciers region. We entered the boss level and what do you know. The Boss Jump is impossible because you need a lot of speed and there is a small bump in front of it which leads to you crashing into the jump pad at 100 km/h. Braking doesn't work because you won't have enough speed and there is no other way to the finish line.

My advice for the developers is to make some levels themselves and keep the procedural generation thing as a second. I'm positive that they can pull it of because outside of the level design, the game is really fun.

A general rule of thumb is that video game adaptations will suck 90% of the time. This short film is in the 10% that doesn't. Never ever have I been more impressed by a video game adaptation than this one. Even if it is not about the game's story, you can see how much connection the movie has to it's source material.

The creators definitely have something here. They really shouldn't hesitate to make a full version of this.

My advice: Play Papers Please for like 4 hours to get a feel of what is going on. (It's 9 dollars or something, A bargain for how good it is.) After that, watch the movie.

I was a fool 3 years ago.

The game is dead and you know it. Don't waste your money.

@Touz, your statement might be/is true but i'm not here to blow smoke up the asses of people who read this. You definitely show your capabilities but this game is out of the league of a 1 man team ( or more, I might be wrong). We are now at version 0.0.6. That version number alone tells me that this game won't ever be a finished product ( With the likelyhood of you abandoning it even tho you said otherwise.) "Dead" is more of a camouflaged word for "Far FAAR from leaving Early Acces" and becoming a full game.

Don't take this personally, but I'm not convinced you/you all are able to finish the game at all, thus the negative review.

It might be the fact that I played 2 before 1, because this game is relatively easy compared to it's sequel, which I think is good.

Pros
- More Realistic AI
- AI doesn't have inhuman super speed
- There is only 1 story, not multiple like in 2. Which makes the story more followable.
- This is easier than 2
- The soundtrack
- It being a Hotline Miami game

Cons
- If you've played 2 before one, you will probably finish this under 3 - 4 hours
- AI is more realistic, but also more stupid

10/10, wouldn't press R again.
