As a fan of both strategy games and tower defense, I can safely say that I had fun playing Protolife and would recommend the game to anyone who is a fan of an unorthodox twist to tower defense and, more specifically, turtling or turret-creeping in strategy games.

Note: I have completed the main campaign and have dived a bit into the postgame content. Anything I discover in the New Game+ and/or the Experiments (randomly generated scenarios) will be added at later times.

Gameplay: 8/10
  • Solid and innovative tower defense gameplay that's recommended for any fans in the genre, though might not convince non-fans or newcomers
  • Building turrets and bases are a delight
  • The dynamic of the main enemy marginally covers up the little variety of normal enemy types; there is only a single boss fight that has any sort of innovation
  • Multiple types of objectives, though killing everything is almost always an option
  • Modest campaign length (4-7 hours, depending on skill level)

Replayability: 8/10
  • New Game+ allows you to take your entire arsenal against earlier levels that have revamped difficulty
  • Experiments add random-generated scenarios that allows you to design new turrets to play around with
  • Lack of variety of core game mechanics might burn people out; entirely dependent on your value of the novelty of the game's mechanics

Music and Sound Design: 7/10
  • The tracks provided are very atmospheric with gameplay tying very nicely to musical cues
  • There is barely not enough track variety to cover the whole length of the campaign
  • Turrets and enemies have adequate hit-sounds

Overall: 8/10
  • For the price tag, fans of the genre looking to find something new can pick this up at full price
  • Those that are more wary will probably want to pick this up on sale or get it as a modest gift from a friend
  • Because of the niche mechanics and the difficulty that preys on those that can't manage everything going to hell in very short amounts of time, consider picking up a different tower defense game for a first experience, then coming back to this if you're interested in more

After thoughts: The developers have worked on this game tremendously from when it first came out. I did not encounter any difficulty spikes that I could not adapt to and all of the replayability was added before I picked this game up. If they build upon the variety of units that this game can throw at you, design more bosses like the 2nd one, and polish the building of non-diagonal turrets and the tedium of killing the last bit of protolife on larger levels, I would consider this game one of the best innovations to the tower defense genre. And on a personal request, maybe some co-op. Local only is fine with me, since I have heard of the absolute nightmare netcoding is for smaller developers; though maybe a PvE game like this can netcode a bit easier. Not at all something I'm asking anyone else to agree with me on, but you did have a segment where you had to control two different construction bots, plus this would allow you to construct mega-bases for scenarios like the one in the trailer.
