Fun little student game. Simple and effective third-person shooting with a neat time manip gimmick. Big fan of Maya's design. Fairly easy, though.

I'd be glad to see the devs make a full-fledged title someday.

It's okay for a hollow knight knockoff but it's so point for point a clear hollow knight replica I wonder if team cherry could sue for a few bucks towards their crack and hooker addiction I mean silksong development. I was really confused when I realized this was a kickstarter game.
With the exception of being able to bank your cash, what few deviations it takes all do the game a disservice. Spending money to heal makes boss runs suck. The color-sorted spin on charms meant every QoL passive like gold magnet was mutually exclusive with the map secret scanner. You never get any stronger, I was at the end of the game killing the basic enemies in the first area in exactly the same number of hits. The final boss isn't even a new enemy. It's literally just the three major bosses but all at once. The ending tells me nothing. I really just felt like I was going through the motions of a metroidvania without getting anything out of it.

If you really want to play Hollow Knight for the first time again, but in a compact package for busy people, pick it up on sale, I guess.

Most of the negative reviews about this game are about how the true final boss wipes your save if you lose. I'm with them, and I liked it until then too, but there's not enough emphasis on one thing. If you believe shmups are designed to be finished in one credit, that's fine. I usually agree. But asking to finish in one life is too much, especially in a game where defensive options are this scant, and nonexistent during that final boss. So because in that boss your current stock of continues is converted directly to the number of lives you have during this single shot at the fight, you will be farming for continues regardless. And I don't ever want to level grind in a shmup, much less one with stages this long.

So no thanks. But hey, I like the soundtrack.

Rewriting review to get more to the point.

It gets so boring having literally nothing on my ship and still getting sunk at first contact by every galleon that sees me.

People keep repeating the "it's a pirate game of course you'll get robbed" but there's nothing to rob. Grand Theft Auto is a game about, you know, grand theft auto, among other violent crimes, so how come that game has so much less of a problem with player interactions than this one? Why does Rare continue to clap their hands on their ears and chant about the "experience" when their flowery belief in a game of jolly adventure, cooperation, and brave clashes doesn't exist?

I wouldn't even mind being attacked willy-nilly as much if people at least spoke at all when spoken to, but they usually don't.

I like the game when I get to play it. But most of the time that gets abruptly halted and that sucks.

I bought this game expecting cool platforming and slinging gimmicks, and instead I got a "puzzle" to lift a metal cog out of a pit and affix it to a mechanism on the ceiling. It took 6 manually-aimed webs to even get it off the ground because of course this tiny spider's web has zilch for strength. Following that, a "puzzle" to drag metal pipes into missing spots, several feet off the ground. It was tedious, imprecise, and exhausting. I did not have fun. I went elsewhere and got the slinging I wanted, but it was over in 10 minutes. I had no eagerness to return to the "puzzles," so I stopped playing.

Also, that "this game was built on ancestral lands of so-and-so tribes" shlock on game start is pure tripe.

They really put all the Bruce Lee stuff in a loot box
That's so slimy I'm actually impressed

Edit: What an absolute joke of a canned dev response. I guarantee you I will not enjoy the game, indeed I have no intention to ever play it again. Have a wretched day.

Refunded when the game insulted me by taking over my wallpaper to tell me the answer to a button puzzle that could have been offered literally any other way. In fact, I walked through a room that provided the exact same graphic on a wall. Why did you even bother?
I suppose the passive-aggressive patronization of the fourth-wall-breaking entity, spouting your real name with dismissive scorn, is supposed to be critical to how I'm intended to care about this world, because I wasn't really given much other reason, even Niko is pretty flat. But I've played games like Spec Ops enough that spite against a plot force that tells you to stop isn't a good enough reason for me to finish a game anymore. I will simply take its advice and stop playing if it wants me to so badly.

Oh yeah, I'm also told you have to complete the game multiple times to get the whole story.
That's a bad mechanic.

I like this game but I can't stand it for one critical reason: dots don't stack, they just refresh. Not in any way that applies additional damage or anything, it just restarts the timer. The game likes dots so much there's a different one for each element with their own resistances and such, but this design seems to dissuade laying on dots, so I don't feel it worth investing in at all.
Flames of Ignaffar, for example, an Inquisitor spell. It's a channeled ability that every 0.3s deals some direct damage and a lot more dot damage. You'd think holding the fire on the same target would make it burn harder, but nah, that dot timer just resets multiple times per second without ever changing how much damage it deals. And again, channeled, so you're standing there defenseless while doing this. So what's the point? Why not just do a big chunk of direct damage instead?
And that's not even the end of it: Increased dot duration doesn't increase the damage dealt. So you actually tick for LESS, over a longer period of time. FoI even specifically has a passive to do this. Why? Why not do what literally every other game would do, and either do the same amount of damage per tick for more ticks, or keep the duration the same while doing more damage per tick?
Apparently this is not the case. My group was quite confident it was before, but I don't follow the patch notes that closely.

I tried getting a run started multiple times with multiple groups, and fell off of it every time because this was such a dealbreaker. I've waited ages for a patch to address *something* about this bizarre behavior, but nothing ever came. Feels like such a waste.

Editing for dev response. I appreciate the speedy feedback, and equally do not appreciate Steam for never telling me.
So this is a "working as intended," which I'm not sure I like. I know different sources of dots stack, but all that really seems to encourage is a faceroll build of a wide array of level 1 skills instead of investing in making a few strong ones. Most importantly, it doesn't answer the question of what the intended use of Flames of Ignaffar's channel is.

So in the tutorial, you're informed that if a guard spots the chest being taken, the entire base goes into lockdown. Okay, fair enough. Be careful, don't get caught.

That's not what happens. The base goes into lockdown the second you pick up the chest, even if there's no one in half a mile around you. And once it does, the invincible Sheriff begins his Terminator march directly to it, whether he should have any idea where it is or not. If he finds it, he paces around it forever. If you sneak it away from him, he saunters over to wherever it goes.
Then if that's not stupid enough, once a chest begins extraction, guards endlessly respawn to attack the extract point. And you're supposed to hold the extract button without being interrupted? On top of all this, the game is built to be PvP, and extraction is the only part that's actually scored, so the enemy team can simply gank you and run away with it if you're stupid enough to play the objective this far?
What's the point of even pretending this is a game about stealth or strategy if direct confrontation is the outcome the game enforces even if played correctly?

Thanks for the free weekend, so I could find out how badly the mark was missed on this neat concept without losing anything but my time for it.

I recently discovered Jadwiga is literally a canonized saint, and she died from childbirth complications

So I gotta say turning her into an e-girl with a form-fitting outfit and a pear figure is pretty wildly disrespectful even by civ's standards
