One of my favourite releases in years. It plays like a first-person version of Hotline Miami with the fluidity of movement, flair, and inventiveness of Deathloop. Somehow it's also got an involving story and critique of the military-industrial complex with characters you'll grow attached to told efficiently through narrated vignettes.

Developers should be real proud of this one.

Good job, Babe.

It's very much a spiritual successor to CoD2 and CoD4 Promod. At the time of writing, there's some issues with matchmaking being a bit buggy - but once you're in a game it's a nostalgic return to shooters past.

Dreamfall has a pretty good, if at times awkwardly presented plotline. It is the successor to popular 90s point 'n' click adventure The Longest Journey, and despite being in third person, unfortunately embodies many of the more archaic design choices that came with the genre of its predecessor - mixed with poorly implemented stealth and combat segments.

Moving the camera is jarring, and expect to need to change your controls when you first fire up the game, as mouse movement is inverted by default. Voice acting is a mixed bag, with the protagonist through much of the game, Zoe, being the weakest of the bunch; sounding frequently disinterested, though less so as the game progresses.

Play it for the plotline if sci-fi fantasy is your thing, but be aware that the mechanics still have a distinctive feel of being stuck in a time some decades past.

Playing Lethe reminds me in many ways of playing Penumbra, and that alone is high praise. I must say that I am thrilled that this game is actually a *survival* horror - too many recently released games in this genre are effectively haunted house rides with no actual danger to the player, but there are environmental and sentient hazards abound in Lethe.

The story is also engaging, mixing in elements of science fiction and mystery to an otherwise realist backdrop makes for some awe-inspiring spectacles later on in the game.

Additionally, I must say that the development team behind Lethe is nothing short of wonderful. After I logged a complaint that a certain camera sway that the game employs by default was causing me nausea and discomfort, the developers came through in a number of days with a patch containing a variable I could use to tone it down to levels I found playable. Thanks once again for that, lads.

Overall, I feel a lot of Frictional Games influence here - my single complaint is that sometimes the physics on objects glitch out a little and make it difficult to move forward, but that's largely rectified by a mechanic introduced early in the game. Recommended.

Pathologic is a particularly peculiar game. It should be noted that the game is slow, reliant on (text) dialog that is either purposefully written to be esoteric or is a representation of the developers native language (Russian, I believe) not being translated to English particularly well and averse to explanation. If this doesn't sound like your kind of game - it's likely that this is the case.

The storyline of Pathologic, as explained by a charming opening sequence set in a theatre, is that there are three playable characters - all of whom believe that they are the best choice to save a small, 19th century town in Eastern Europe. When the player assumes the role of any of these characters, they will attempt to save as many people in the town as possible from a series of seemingly impossible deaths.

The game doesn't explain anything more than that from the getgo - all additional plot information is inferred through talking to the various characters that populate the town.

The game is old, and it's not particularly aged well. The interfaces are manageable, but often confusing. The graphics are dated, but not offensively poor. The game is absolutely nonlinear - even to the point that it seems directionless initially, but makes up for it in intrigue.

I would not recommend this game if you're looking for something fast paced - but if you're looking to make your own path and try to solve something - this game might be for you.

Drunken Robot Pornography is, for certain, a name that stands out. Unfortunately I'm unable to say the same for the game itself. Drunken Robot Pornography is a fairly standard bullet-hell shooter in a first person perspective. The game consists of multiple arenas in which you destroy a number of small enemy forces followed by a number of larger bosses. This must be completed inside the timeframe.

The actual shooting in the game provides very little feedback making the game kinda feel dull to play. The graphical style is bright and colourful but lacks depth.

The storyline is not important to the gameplay at all, but it's humerous to read (in a good way) - even if the plot elements at play are kinda trivial.

I can't recommend it at the standard retail price - but if it goes on sale you may have a few hours of fun with the game if you're a fan of the bullet-hell or first-person shooter genres (like myself).

Let's begin the review with a note that I bought Dead Secret expecting the game to be a first-person horror experience akin to Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It's not. Dead Secret is a first-person point-and-click puzzler. I don't have a lot of experience with the genre, but I decided I'd give it a shot anyway - so take this with a grain of salt if you're a big point-n-click fan.

Now, I found the interface incredibly cumbersome. I tried to give the game a pass as it was clearly intended for use in VR, but it was frustrating and cumbersome to use with my mouse and keyboard.

The puzzles were generally well sign-posted, but the amount of backtracking combined with the characters incredibly slow movement speed meant that it just felt like padding when I just wanted to continue learning about the storyline.

The "horror" aspects of this game are not particularly good, unfortunately. It pulls the odd horror trope, but none of them were executed in a well enough manner to actually elicit more than an eye-roll response. It can be given a pass on account that the game isn't really a "horror" game, though.

The voice acting is limited exclusively to the protagonist, a reporter attempting to dig out more clues with regards to a murder victim. It's not awful, just mediocre. I took particular note of the constant monotone - even when talking about subjects that should inspire or excite the protagonist such as finding new clues or talking about their idols.

The game seems to launch at the Unity "Fastest" preset. I've read that this occurs on a range of hardware. To sort this out, hold "shift" when you open the game and you can change the graphics settings. This will sort out the flat lighting and distracting aliasing - but the game is no visual spectacle (probably on account of it being available on mobile platforms). The art style is nice though, and largely makes up for it.

It's a shame, because these gripes aside the storyline is relatively engaging - and the various scattered notes are well written and provide a real sense of world building. The plot contains various supernatural elements, and while the scares are consistently not up to par, they do make for an interesting additions to the plot. Also, I'd really like to read the full text of the books interspaced in-game - whoever wrote those in the development team should consider writing a book.

All in all, I really wanted to like this game - it's obviously a labour of love from its developers, but I generally found the experience was a few solid pros outweighed by a ton of niggling cons. Those that revel in point-and-click games and harbour any interest in the supernatural / murder-mystery will likely extract some enjoyment from this game.

Kentucky Route Zero aspires to be, if nothing else, esoteric. The plot follows an aging truck driver moving to deliver a package to an elusive street named Dogwood Drive; a journey peppered with unlikely travelling companions and quizzically absurd happenings - presented with qualities akin to that of a bizarre dream that you only begin to question upon waking up.

Kentucky Route Zero is certainly not for everyone. It is slow, wordy and deliberate - sharing more in common with art-house cinema than a typical video game. Those coming in search of thrills will likely do well to look elsewhere; but those looking for a romp that is mysterious, understated and charmingly quaint could do worse than taking a ride on the Zero.

Side note: At time of writing, this game is incomplete - the final act is currently in production and will be released in an update for free.

For the first time writing a review, I feel utterly stumped with regards to what I should say about the product.

It's deeply, intrinsically personal - despite purpotedly being a critique of another developers work. In its way it exposes some fundamental flaws of the creators character, and as someone who suffers from social anxiety, I find that the themes presented by the game are intensly relatable.

I didn't find myself as affected as I was lead to believe I would be by various other reviews, but I can say that I found myself reflecting on traits of my own personality having finished it.

Some might consider The Beginners Guide to be pretentious, or invasively heavy handed with the message it tries to get across - but I see it as a no-holds-barred insight into the thoughts of another.

It's not a "game" in the traditional sense, but I can recommend it.

SUPERHOT was born of a game-jam, and much of the focus and simplicity that comes with time constraints has carried over to this commercial reimagining. The game is streamlined, focusing on its one major mechanic (time effectively stops when you stop) over a variety of increasingly difficult levels. Its distinct graphical aesthetic and endearingly DOS-like user interface make the game instantly recognisable and memorable.

It's only a shame then that, for the price, SUPERHOT doesn't contain much content. The campaign can be completed in 2 hours easily and while the additional gamemode mutators are interesting, they don't really make up the price.

SUPERHOT would've really benefited from a level editor and some way to share them amongst the community (Steam Workshop?)

The game itself is great, and I recommend it - but if you're tight on cash maybe wait for a price drop.
