NOTE: This review was written before the new gamemode update. What I say here still pertains to the old gamemode though. There's an edit at the bottom which says my opinions on the new mode.

I'll start of this review by saying: I love the idea. This game has all of the pieces there to make a great game.
Unfortunately, it misses the mark for me for a few reasons.

1) The mini players have no lose condition, making each match a war of attrition until the minis inevitably beat the giant. This is a very boring core gameplay loop, and a problem that could be addressed fairly easily. I can even think of a few suggestions, maybe the mini players could have individual life counters and when one of them reaches 0, that player is out for the rest of the game, and when all of them are out the giant wins. Or you could have a game be played in "rounds" where all of the players spawn in at once and when the giant survives a certian number of rounds, they win.
2) The giant player is surprisingly underpowered. Whenever I played a game as a mini player, I was getting a ton of points, but as the giant player, I was getting way fewer. Now, I know that the towers cost less to buy/upgrade than the mini players upgrades do, but I have a feeling that the ratio of points earned to towers/upgrades bought is just off. Simple fix again: just make the giant player earn more. Maybe give them a point or two for each player that falls off.
3) It's frustrating playing as the mini player, even when the giant player isn't doing very well. Now, i think this one's more of a psychological thing but I figured I'd put it here. I was playing a game as a mini player and the giant was spamming the wind power whenever I jumped and as such, I ended up dying a lot in situations that I would hardly call my fault. Did I get to the end a bunch of times afterwards? Yes. Did I feel any better about doing so? No. I did not feel much (if at all) better about getting to the end and eventually winning the game. I believe this is in part because of the lack of a win condition for the giant player, instilling almost a sense of futility about what I was doing. ("We'll win anyways, what's the point?")

It sucks that I have to give this review a thumbs down, but I'm only doing it so you can make this game better! I believe you can make this game better than it's current state!

EDIT: I am leaving this edit after the new gamemode came out. When I first saw it, I thought "Oh! This looks better!" One of my concerns with the original gamemode was that it really felt pointless. But with the new one there's a point! if you get to the end, you become the big guy! So, I updated the game and played it, and...

It's still not that fun.

To elaborate, when someone gets to the end, then they become the big guy, but then, everything gets refunded. The reason this is a big deal is it makes the whole experience feel less cohesive. Like an episode of Family Guy, but it's only cutaway gags, and all the cutaway gags are the same. This one has an easy solution, keep all of the towers and upgrades between different big guys. I think it would be cool to see the level become a giant hodge-podge of the different players' defending styles.
Also, at a certain point, the big guy doesn't have enough time to set their defenses up before a small player jumps past it all and glides to the end. In a normal game, that means that the big guy will die and the game will be over. However, in this gamemode it means late-game rounds usually play like the following:
1) new big guy
2) re-buy all of your upgrades/towers
3) someone makes it on their first try
4) repeat
until the game ends.
While I'm on the subject, the jump+glide build is way too OP on most maps. Either nerf it, or buff everything around it. Or change the maps so you cant skip 90% of them by jumping.
Also, a score board of some kind would go a long way in making the game more fun. Just being able to see "Ooh, I just need to last a little while longer to get to 1st!" would make this that much more bearable.

In the end, I feel that this new gamemode is a step in the right direction, but it (much like the one that came before it) needs some major tweaks before I can give a thumbs up.

Works, but the expanded mastery and homeland slots should be default instead of locked behind a $9 paywall.

Truly, a masterpiece. The puzzles were extremely clever and the ending pushed me to tears. A perfect experience.

Well... except for the diamond-shaped puzzle.
That puzzle can suck a fat one.

Any type of game that tries this style of progression (I'll call them "ROUNDS-likes" for now) usually falls into one of two opposing categories:

1: There are a bunch of over-the-top powers/upgrades/etc.
- These are usually more chaotic in nature, and almost no two games are ever the same. It is harder to balance this type of game though.

2: The upgrades are less wacky and more stat-upgrade-y.
- These usually play out very similar each game, even if you technically chose different upgrades. However, these are easier to balance than the alternative.

ROUNDS is the first type.
UpGun is the second type.

I prefer the first type, and most of UpGun's upgrades are too boring and/or simple for me.

Couple that with copious glitches, a melee attack that feels way to slow and janky, and absurdly long games (for comparison: ROUNDS has AT MOST 11 matches that take about ~2 or so minutes to compete. UpGun has over 25 matches that take 3 minutes each. Do the math), and you end up with a thumbs down review, which sucks because the potential for a 3d Fps ROUNDS is amazing, but unfortunately it is a long ways to go.

Sorry.
