I want to like this game but its bizarre balancing and glacial development make me think it's likely a dud.

In a macro-focused RTS like this one you'd expect some simplistic rock-paper-scissors style unit combat like in Command & Conquer but you'd be very wrong here. This game has solid unit variety, but has seemingly had zero thought put into the roles these units should fill in the roster.

Why can artillery target aircraft? Why are they as fast, durable, and as capable of repositioning as infantry? Why don't they cost oil to use like the tanks do?

Why do strategic bombers out-range the dedicated fighter aircraft? Why can they deal devastating damage to mobile units like tanks? Why would you ever waste airfield space on anything but strategic bombers when all the other aircraft have specialized niches that the bomber can fill itself?

These sorts of oddball design decisions are where the 'Line' part of Line War ultimately falls apart. There is no incentive to band a variety of units across the map in a cohesive frontline when a blob of cheap, all-rounder units like artillery or bombers can beeline straight to the enemy base instead. Sometimes people get creative and opt to blob up something like helicopters instead, but you're never going to be seeing the big, expansive frontlines advertised all over the store page being used by anyone but new players, and I think that's a shame.

With some more mechanical tweaks and love from the developers, this game could be a solid and innovative RTS title, but until then you're better off looking elsewhere.

This is a lovingly-crafted niche title that brings back all of the best memories of games like Air Buccaneers. The small, albeit dedicated community is steadily growing and I've encountered very few toxic cretins in my time with the game. The only complaint I have is about the lack of a dedicated deathmatch mode for airship combat without the downtime. All in all this is an incredible game and well worth your money.

EDIT: We recently got our dedicated deathmatch mode. Buy this game.

Possibly my favorite game of all time. Support these devs in every way imaginable. They can only turn down sexual favors so many times.
