This is in contrast to some games where you can't host servers yourself. When the developer of such a game stops support -- you're screwed. Can't play the game anymore. How many great games are lost to time due to this, for no good reason? I can still play and enjoy (and I do) Arma: Cold War Assault, Counter-Strike, or original Ace of Spades (but not the Steam version!). And I'm thankful for that.

Not sure why the comments are disabled on your Counter-Strike review, but I just want to say this: I don't think self-hosting servers is a flaw. In fact, I think it's best. If Counter-Strike had only official servers, all the burden of maintaining them would be on Valve. Which would be harder to do years down the line if (most likely) game became not profitable. (Geographical) server coverage would also suffer greatly.

With players responsible for hosting servers, servers are up as long as there are people who are interested in maintaining them. And Valve only has to keep the master server running. There is 'direct connect' also, so people could in theory still play the game if Valve dropped support completely.
