Starting a new character in a new world as a beginner may seem very daunting, as they just throw you into the game without any direct path, but that's what the Guide NPC is for, if you don't know what to do, talk to the guide, he'll give you an idea of what to do; stick to that, and you'll find yourself playing the game a lot more than you thought you would. The Guide can also help with crafting, as he has a whole tab dedicated to it; showing you different crafting recipes when you drag an item that is classified as a material, and it'll even tell you what crafting station you need to use in order to craft what you find interesting. As you gain more experience throughout the game, it just gets more and more fun, as you become powerful and challenge the bosses to progress even further. Soon enough, you've already beaten the final boss, but it's not over yet, there are still things to do after beating the game. Maybe clear all corruption and hallow, complete all the achievements in one world, build cool structures for the NPC's that have been moving into your world since you've started it, get every single endgame armor set and weapons for each of the classes, there is still so much more to do in one world, it's amazing. I haven't even gotten into talking about the modded scene of Terraria, which is something you should look into if you REALLY have nothing to do in the base game, as some tend to find vanilla Terraria boring after going back to the game from playing the vast majority of mods.

Experienced Terraria players aren't left out though, as I've always seen myself come back to the game time and time again to make a new character, world, and go through the game all over again using a different class. After beating the game I always like to try to make the world look decent, even making my character look better. Although I only have almost 300 hours on the game, there's still so much that I'm going to do, but I don't have to do it right now, it's more fun getting back into the game after some time has passed, remembering all the things that I've done on the game in the past, and maybe even visiting those old worlds on my other characters.

Try The Ascent custom workshop map, it is very fun with friends and remember not to put reset shot or else the map gets boring. But overall this game is really fun, if you allow collision, which I suggest you should always do, you can mess around and troll your friends for fun, just don't do it for long periods because you want everyone to have fun instead of making one person feel targeted and unable to play the game. Every map experience I've had (workshop or not) I had tons of fun when I was playing with my friends, and what makes these sessions so fun is the different ways people approach and react to shots that they or you take, whether it be the shot throwing them off course, or if you hit a sick hole in one.

I was lost when I first started the game, and for a time I just stopped playing because I didn't know what to do. But when I was given some guidance by my brother and was helped by my friends, I got really hooked into the game, realizing that there is so much to do, so many choices to make, and a variety of weapons to choose how to go through your journey. Next thing you know I surpass level 500 and am now in a ng+4 soon to be five. You can feel lost at the start of the game because of how many choices are given to you, or at least that is what I felt when I started the game, but once you make a choice it can get you going in no time, and then after finishing that quest, or getting that weapon, or beating that boss, you realized you spent so much time and found yourself on a path.
