Overview:
Metaphor presents an engaging main plot full of unexpected twists and a well-executed main antagonist that keeps players invested. Coming from a background of Persona 5 Royal, the narrative held my attention, but there were some notable differences that impacted my overall experience.

Storyline and Characters:
The main story in Metaphor is intriguing and layered, with moments that genuinely surprise. However, when it comes to characters, there's a noticeable difference. While they are well-developed, each with their own backstories and motivations, they often feel too morally perfect—as if plucked from a fairy tale. Each one embodies the idea of being "against all bad, for all good."

In comparison, Persona 5 shines in this department. Its characters felt alive, showing a wide range of emotions, humor, and camaraderie that made them relatable. In Metaphor, character interactions lack this depth, boiling down to simple motivations like “They killed many people, I’m angry, let’s fight.” This reduced emotional engagement makes the cast feel less dynamic.

Gameplay:
Metaphor features a calendar system, meaning that each main mission—and some side quests—has a deadline. This mechanic adds a layer of strategic decision-making to each day, as players must choose between pursuing side quests, strengthening bonds with companions, or completing smaller activities to improve the protagonist’s stats.

Main missions take place in expansive dungeons that can take several hours to complete. Battles are conducted in a traditional turn-based JRPG style where one team makes moves, followed by the opposing team. Players can opt to use items, cast spells, or attack during each turn.

One interesting aspect is that characters can study any class (warrior, mage, etc.), each starting with a unique default. Choosing the right combination of classes for the team is essential based on the dungeon at hand. However, a significant drawback is that classes cannot be changed mid-battle. This limitation can be frustrating, especially when facing unexpected bosses that require a different strategy. To adjust, players must either lose the fight or restart the game to load a previous save.

Random encounters in dungeons sometimes catch players off guard after cutscenes, which compounds the issue. In one instance, my main character's class automatically switched right before the final battle, disrupting my carefully prepared setup.

Combat Mechanics:
Despite the class-change limitation, the combat is well-designed, with distinct, varied classes and engaging mechanics that require strategic thinking. It kept me constantly engaged, which was a major highlight.

Final Thoughts:
While Metaphor didn’t resonate with me as deeply as Persona 5 Royal—largely due to its medieval setting and the less emotionally vivid characters—I still thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay. It’s a game I’d recommend, especially for those who appreciate JRPGs with strategic depth and strong storytelling, even if it doesn’t fully replicate the magic of Persona 5.

Final Rating:
Recommended for fans of the genre who are looking for a strategic and well-executed JRPG with a fresh twist.
