This is the best RTS/4X hybrid game I've ever played. Turn-based 4X games are easy to find, and many of the most popular are good. Too 4X for you? Homeworld (1) is your solution. I know what you're thinking. "But what about Sins of a Solar Empire?". It is a trick. There is no more depth of play in there than Conquest:Frontier Wars, which had no improvements in gameplay over traditional RTS games. They just take longer. This is your game. Want massive armadas? Check. Varied tech options? Check. Randomized worlds? Check. Both objective-based gameplay and traditional galactic attrition? Check.
