As a beginner, I appreciate that AI makes blunders at low ELO-levels and gives me a chance to fight back. You'll see your ELO meter increase or decrease after each game, which adds to the feeling of progress. But what's extra cool, the AI's ELO also increases or decreases, so it will be in perfect zone to provide challenge at your level.

There are six saving slots for your games, so you can play several games with different settings. Each game can be reviewed after it's finished, and you can get its PGN record for use in other software. Talking about match settings, you can play without time, or have 5-min blitz, 45-min-long game, Fischer's 30 mins + 30 sec/move, or 24 hours/move game. The only thing that's missing is chess 960 mode unfortunately.

The game is perfectly functional and enjoyable. I have to recommend it to all chess lovers.

This pack doesn't deserved mixed rating at all. It's simply majestic.

All the figures have so much detail and yet the silhouettes are distinct enough to be playable. And because in the game you actually select the squares the pieces are on (and not the piece itself), you will not mis-click like some reviews mistakenly claim.

As a plus, this chess set is not harsh on the eyes like other brighter chess sets and sceneries. Very pleasing to the eye.

It can be quite captivating moving your troops turn after turn and seeing these dice roll while tearing your hair out, so try it out by all means.

As for DLC and supporting the game, I'm personally hesitant to buy any DLC unless I start seeing that the development focus has shifted from churning out factions to developing the meat and bones of the game -- new endless game mode, customized campaign start, added flavor text and description, some hint of the story. I'm not demanding it to be added all at once as soon as possible, but I would like to see the steps being takes toward this goal.

The AI art aspect of this game is of no concern to me really, but what I've noticed with the new non-AI commissioned art is that the designs are over repetitive to the point of being tasteless, and suffers from looking flat (shadows aren't deep enough). You would expect to see it from AI actually and not from a person, wouldn't you? However, it is what it is and I'm not a fan of it. So oddly enough, I'd like to see the AI art because at least it has old school feel to it, it's not overdone and has enough depth to it.

And returning back to the DLC, I would hate to buy a DLC of Lizardmen, let's say, and see 6 month later that they received art rework which in my opinion could be worse than AI art. It's just another factor why I'm hesitant as I'd mentioned.

But the game is free, so it's worth checking out and making the decision whether to support the game yourself.

Arguably, a key feature for any chess game is missing. That is, you can't save your match progress.

Imagine playing for almost two hours only to find out that you can't save your progress. Even worse, the game allows you to "save the game", but it doesn't inform you that it WILL NOT save the matches' progress itself... I'm not a developer, but I think game saves should be implemented at earlier stages of the game than version 0.7.

I brought up this issue with the developer, and he seems to agree that it'd be a good idea to add this missing feature. However, there's no timeline or guarantee that it will be added, so buyer beware.

Another disappointing thing is that the game lost support for UCI engines. Limiting the customer doesn't feel like a step in right direction. The chess engine you're glued to now is some Lizard chess engine. The developer advertises it as a high ELO chess engine, citing the Blitz ELO results, but these results are typically inflated in blitz games. So essentially, it's a 2200 ELO engine and not a 3749 ELO. No amount of blitz games are going to change that. For reference, the Chessmaster's King engine has 2600 ELO and it's decades old.

Considering all of that, I think it's a mistake to attempt the price hike that's promised to us from the version 0.8 onward, but even at its current price, I don't think it's worth it. Just think, how many early access titles didn't allow you to save game progress fully? Not many I reckon.

Truly a time waster. All those reviews telling funny engaging stories are squeezed out of five-minute situations that you'll experience once or twice in fifty hours of regular gameplay. A mediocre book is still more interesting and captivating than this.

In other words, it's a sandwich with one green lettuce leaf in-between. It's unique, but it's not enjoyable in the way that you think it is.

Word of caution to new buyers: don't buy any DLC even if you like the first twenty hours or so; give it more time to think over. I wish I did anyway.

Update: So I'm going to mess around with some settings and the initial setup to see if that improves the stories and reduces time-wasting.

The crashing and visual glitches make it impossible to play this technical "marvel." Avoid at all costs.

The positive reviews couldn’t be further from the truth.

What kind of garbo do people read that the writing in this “game” feels like gold to them? Usually, I can appreciate good writing regardless of whether I like the story, but this is just a glorified fan-fiction level of writing. It’s wordy where it needs to be short, and short where it needs to expand, but most of the times, it’s wordy everywhere…

Although the Pillars of the Earth was largely disappointing for me, it does a much better job in being a game, visual novel and book. My advice is, play the demo and don’t expect it to get better.

P.S. (to myself) If it's a visual novel, don't put off playing the game soon for at least two hours. Otherwise, it'll be too late to return it. I was too late with this one...

The gameplay consists of two things: card collecting and fighting scenes. The former serves its purpose well, but the latter is atrocious. It feels like a mediocre PS1 action game, where you struggle to even turn the character in the right direction. All of the fights are just padding to extend the playtime.

Moreover, all of the quests you play are irrelevant and pointless. For example, as a player or even a character, why would you care about accompanying some random farmer to some random village? His background is nonexistent, he’s not being developed during the quest and the ending is meaningless. And of course, this quest is not connected to the next quest.

It’s a big time waster, that fails both to challenge and intrigue the player.

My biggest complaint is that the punches and effects lack the oomph, and the whole experience is highly polished in a bad way. It’s like going to a theme restaurant that’s clearly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it, versus going to a theme restaurant that makes it a very believable experience. Aside from that, it’s a typical beat-‘em-up that you’ll probably enjoy.
