Rage 2 finally embraces its open world ambitions that Rage set for itself. Back is the trademark id Software shooting, but most of the Ark suit abilities are new. These abilities are the crux of the fun you're most definitely going to have. Playing on Normal will make you feel like a superhero. Dispatching a large group of enemies with a combo of attacks is a bliss that rivals the double wielding of shotguns in Wolfenstein: The New Order. Dare I say it, it's even more fun than that. I love clearing a Mutie Nest or a Bandit Den with these new abilities. In Rage 2 you want to pick a fight, cos it makes you feel invincible.

It's a shame it doesn't double down on the story. The cliche of killing bad guys because they're bad is applied here. As Walker, you're a ranger in a super suit that has General Martin Cross for a target. In the opening scripted sequence he kills your people, people you just met. You leave Vineland behind, which will never show signs of rebuilding. That is if you even bother to drive back there, since it lacks a fast travel icon. When two studios join forces to make a single player game and are not able to produce anything compelling in the story department it's just bizarre. There is a short list of missions that branch out to several objectives, but if you were to focus entirely on the story you'd finish this game in a blink of an eye.

Rage 2 doesn't take itself seriously, the marketing made it very clear, but it doesn't even commit to that vision, it simply assigns NPCs silly names, colourful hair and make them do mud angels, for example. NPCs don't look as detailed or alive as they do in Rage for some reason. The player character looks off, especially the eyes. I was never interested in what anyone had to say, because there's no conflict beyond the obvious, no intrigue, no one to root for, no real desire to progress apart from fun gameplay and the singular objective of taking down the bad guys.

I started my Ultra Nightmare playthrough from scratch and I barely made it through the opening, which makes you keep your distance and get good with headshots. You can kill with a headshot using the assault rifle from quite far away, but you lose the feltrite from those kills, cos it disappears fast. I can't remember the last time I played a game back-to-back on two difficulty modes, so the gameplay definitely kept its hooks in me. It is fun taking down convoys with the Phoenix, the only vehicle you can upgrade, sadly, but motorcycles are not fun here. It took me 41 hours to clear the map on Normal and to finish the handful of missions. The map is manageable and the locations varied enough in gameplay and design, but not much within the areas of the map they reside in. Missions and locations aren't "handcrafted" like quests in Witcher 3, which is the bar they should be reaching for.

Rage 2 kept crashing repeatedly until I turned off V-sync under Nvidia Control Panel, which solved the game-idling/alt+tab crashes and cut the number of crashes in half, at least. The game looks great and runs smooth, but still has many issues left to patch. I still get the occasional crash now and then. Audio glitches make me quit the game as well, cos there's no point playing it at that point. I wish the huge graphical artifact disappeared near Wellspring, I have to drive around it, otherwise I might fall through the map. I don't recommend rewarding Bethesda/id Software with €60 for Rage 2 having these issues, but I can't say that you'll experience them for sure. It's worth it for €30 though, imo.

A Plague Tale: Innocence being set in France and made by a French studio, I decided to try the French audio, which turned out to be way better than the English voice over. English with a French accent sounds hoeky, it always reminds me of the French Taunter. Although I missed some of the story by not always reading the subtitles, since I can't speak or understand French, ultimately I was much more immersed. I wonder if there are any bilingual games out there, in the sense that choosing French audio will keep English audio for British soldiers, adding more to immersion and storytelling possibilities.

I liked the story, the secrets within the de Rune family, these children making the most of a dire situation by looking for a new home, looking for answers and for a cure for Hugo, while confronting plague-ridden rats and soldiers, but also getting some help along the way. Even though your only weapon is the sling, there's a surprising amount of crafting and upgrading involved with new ammo types you get from meeting allies. Upgrades and ammo use the same crafting materials for the most part, so choose wisely.

The demo was helpful but should've included an extra chapter. It looks beautiful and the art style gets more impressive as you go along, culminating in some really stunning scenery and almost Giger-like atmosphere in some parts. The AI is more than forgiving, so this is perfect for people who're not patient with stealth games, but I died plenty of times, cos I have zero patience. As you're spotted you're very defenceless early on in the game, so it is advisable upgrading the sling as soon as possible.

I enjoyed the dynamic of protecting my little brother, which adds a story element to stealth gameplay I don't normally come across, but he's also instrumental in helping you progress as a duo, in more ways than one. Reminds me of Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons to a degree. Gameplay variety is well balanced across the 16 chapters, which vary in length. You can finish the campaing in about 9-11 hours, which is totally fine with me, cos no point dragging out a great story over 20 hours of excessive exploration in bigger maps. You also get new gear more frequently, which kinda hurts the story, cos the companions you come across conveniently have a new ammo type that is required to progress.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a nice change of pace from everything else I've played recently. I love the minimalist HUD and the focus on story, although the fate of some characters was handled with much melodrama and I was quite annoyed with the frequent use of "it's pretty" by Hugo in the English audio. I love that Château d'Ombrage is this Kaer Morhen type of hub in the game. You get a chance to explore it a few times before starting a new chapter. I can't stress it enough that the French voice over was superb. If you have this on your wishlist, I highly recommend getting it at 33% off and most definitely at 50% off. It's not a big budget Sony production, but it's pretty amazing what Focus Home Interactive and Asobo Studio have managed to pull off here.

Once you apply the patch for modern resolutions via PCGamingWiki (thank EA for the extra legwork there), turn off all audio (personal preference) and put your favourite podcast (or soap opera) on the left or right of the screen, it is a blast to play. It's a blast to play regardless, but that's how I've gotten to nearly 200 hours of play time. At that point music, sounds and the narrator will just become distracting. That is only if this becomes your casual go-to game when nothing else does it for you. There are a lot of modes to master here, both relaxing and less relaxing. Timed modes like Lightning, Diamond Mine and Ice Storm are by far the hardest, the last of which accounts for the last 3 remaining achievements I don't have. Why does it matter? Why does anything matter? I want to see it through, I want to underline it, put a bow on it, a cherry on top of our time together, Bejelewed 3 and I. It's a great game, it deserves it. Bejeweled 3 also has the charm of a slot machine, cigarette and drink not included. If achievements aren't your thing then you don't have to get a score of 750,000 or more, but if you want to beat the scores of your Steam friends, that's the level of gud you're gonna have to git.

The general idea is to create bombs and plant them as deep as you can. Think dynamite to bring down a whole building, a quarry wall or fireworks in a closed fist (don't do any of these in real life). A match of 3 is the weakest bomb that only takes a bit off the top, while a match of 4 (Flame Gem) is gonna be the minimum goal to do real damage, intersecting matches make Star Gems and five gems in a row creates a Hyper Cube that removes all gems of the colour of your choice. Six or more gems in a row is only possible through a chain reaction. Two Hyper Cubes next to each other will clear the whole board, but don't go out of your way to make that happen. In timed modes your focus is clearing a row or rows as fast as possible almost like in Tetris. Flame Gems and Star Gems, plus Hyper Cubes are going to be your bread and butter. Don't be shy using hints when you're literally too close to notice a way out. Hints can be misleading though, so don't rush it when you can match 4 instead of 3. You could be missing a match of 3 with 5 seconds left and looking straight at it. Bejeweled 3 is perfect design, though I could do without the LGBTQ+ agenda. I mean, the colours are all over the spectrum here. In all seriousness though, it's a fabulous game.

I stayed away from this for a long time because of the asking price to game length ratio, but I'm glad I waited and finally played it. Gone Home lands somewhere between Dear Esther and Marie's Room on one side and What Remains of Edith Finch on the other. It's slow for a reason, but also interactive to a certain extent. The point is to tell a short story, pacing it with slow player movement, some item hunting and audio diaries scattered throughout a big house, the game's only setting. It's set in the 90s, so expect 90s references, but to me the game's charm is in its audio cassettes of punk rock music. I don't remember that many games that have used cassettes or CDs as a storytelling method and here they hit two birbs with one stone, cos it adds to the story and the game's otherwise sombre score.

I also appreciated the writers exploring same sex love, tonally it's a good pick for fans of Life is Strange. The voice acting is good, but I had no interest in reading letters, forms and whatever else. That's not necessarily the fault of the game, rather a fault with the world in general, due to it's insane speed and number of distractions that have lowered the average attention span. Still, I often searched combination codes from the most unnecessary places, going all meta with it, when the game had a much simpler approach in mind. If you want more out of the game, there's the commentary mode, which are usually interesting and some achievements.

Project Warlock has the gameplay of DOOM, the magic of Hexen (I don't know, I haven't played it) and the treasures and castles of Wolfenstein, I suppose. The store page states that Project Warlock is for the fans of these three games. I'm also a fan of quick saves and/or manual saves, which this game lacks, but thankfully it becomes a moot point on Casual. Each level is saved/unlocked upon completion and when you enter the workshop. On higher difficulty levels though, the lack of a proper save system is most likely going to drive you mental sooner or later. You're also dropped into enemy-heavy situations at the start of some levels, but that's what the shotgun is for.

Workshop is the game's hub for updating your weapons, spells, perks, stats and filling up on health and mana. The currency for updating weapons and spells is the same, so choose wisely. Also, every weapon has two upgrades to choose from, but you only get to pick one of each. If you've painted yourself into a corner with the final boss, go back and play single stages for more experience, upgrades and ammo. You won't lose your workshop progress. I was in a much better position to take on the final boss on Casual after replaying the first episode.

The retro art style and the soundtrack especially sealed the deal for me. The soundtrack is excellent and really stands on its own. DOOM gameplay is timeless, so you could technically run around cardboard corridors with no music and still have fun. This comes down to player movement, which is fast and responsive and the weapons of course. If you nail the shotgun, the rest will follow and thankfully your arsenal has fun variety, inspired by the many old school shooters you've played to death. My favourites were the upgraded shotgun, double Uzis, the minigun and the rocket launcher.

I went from dying several times in the first level and hating this game for not having quicksave to running like a maniac and mowing down demons like a lawnmower equipped with nitro. The rest of the difficulty levels are bound to lure me back sooner or later, cos once you have a handle on movement and weapons, you're going to have fun. Since the game doesn't cost the usual 20 euros, buying it now or especially on sale will not end in regret, cos you can easily sink 10 hours into this, which is not bad for the asking price. The levels are fun and balanced, for the most part corridor-like but with enough wiggle room to evade projectiles. If you rage quit early on, don't be disheartened, the levels vary in length, so keep at it and you'll have fun in no time.

Forgotton Anne is a puzzle-platformer but mostly a cinematic story-driven game by Danish developer ThroughLine Games. It's endearing and beautifully animated, you play as Anne, also known as The Enforcer. Your quest is to stop a rebel attack across The Forgotten Lands and bring the Forgotlings responsible to justice. Forgotlings are discarded and forgotten objects from the human world. In this world they're alive and imbued with the life force called Anima. They have lives, jobs, a new purpose, but always a desire to be remembered by their owners, to be reunited with them. As The Enforcer you have the power to remove the life force of Forgotlings if you so choose. You do this with a contraption strapped to your hand, also handy in solving puzzles. Anima fuels everything and everyone in The Forgotten Lands.

It's an admirable story of compassion, trust, finding your own answers and owning up to your choices. The dialogue choices are binary, but not every puzzle platformer goes to these lengths to tell a story. The voice acting is excellent, the writing strikes a nice balance between drama and humour. I can't remember much of the soundtrack but it served its purpose. The art style is hand-drawn anime and the game world looks lovely. I don't mean this as a negative, but nothing overshadows another aspect of design, they all serve the purpose of telling a story, which the game does very well, but gameplay is the neglected part of this game.

Gameplay is very casual puzzle solving, running, jumping, climbing and flying. That's it. Not so much flying than gliding, but you get wings quite early on in the game that allow higher and longer jumps. Also, you will never die from missing a jump, by falling or by the hands of the enemy. You make choices in dialogue, but I can't attest to how differently the game plays out, since I've only played it once. The two choices at the end of the game are still the same, doesn't matter how you arrived there.

I didn't have any issues aside from audio stuttering, which could be on my end. Otherwise it runs great, plays great with a controller, though I kept mixing up the wing jumping. Checkpoint saves are, well, checkpoint saves. I didn't lose much progress, so they're frequent enough, but not being able to skip cutscenes and dialogue is a big no-no for me. I bought it during a sale, but for the 7 or 8 hours and the lovely story, you can't go amiss at full price if you're at a loss as to what game to play. That said, there is no shortage of indie games that look stunning, so the gameplay doesn't do enough to set itself apart. The story does, however.

Solid HL2 mod right hurr. I got stuck in an elevator at one point, had to reload a previous save, but all in all a fun 30 minutes to an hour at the most. A polished, short mod with nice variety, though playing it on hard is recommended if you've played loadsahalflife.

Games I haven't finished, can't review, but will write about

I've tried to start this three times, failed and I feel like a failure, cos supposedly it's a short game. 1 hour on record, another Steam friend has 4 hours and 3 other people have yet to play it. Not a very popular game it seems. Why the hell did I even buy it?

You remember that movie, Gravity? I think that's why I bought this, I thought this would be equally exhilarating, with or without George Clooney. The game looks great, no doubt about that, but I didn't do my research on the gameplay prior to purchasing, so I'm not thrilled to be floating in space with a suit that leaks oxygen, always moving from one oxygen source to another.

From what I can remember, cos it's been a while, Adrone!!!1111ift is a slow-paced survival game, often disorienting, but not to a point of making me nauseous. There are audio logs for exposition, if I want to know why I'm leaking oxygen or reasons not to suffocate I guess. I didn't get far, I wasn't having fun. Until next time, if there is a next time.

edit

Fourth time I'm trying to finish this, I've upgraded two...things. I can refill my oxygen at EVA stations, that's good, and I brought something else online, but it's disorienting and I'm visiting the same places multiple times. Trying to get to the end of Solaris now, but the station is blown to ♥♥♥♥, so I end up back in Spiritus. Very hard to navigate this mess of a space station, cos it's all over the place and no objective indicators to help you. Yes, I'm a noob. A noob that has wasted a lot of his time on this "survival" game.

I try to be as honest as possible when writing reviews, but before buying this I set my game details as private, without realizing that the game's title still appears in chat while playing and also in recent activity under profile, so if I'm not mistaken the only option is to make your profile completely private. I didn't want to advertise I had bought this game at the time, but I did want to write this review, cos it's been hard to write anything lately. Until the recent Holiday sale I never felt I had to hide what I buy on Steam, so my profile has always been fully public, cos I think the information in public profiles is useful to other users in making a purchase.

At the beginning of the game the protagonist you can rename comes out to his two roommates and friends as gay. For those of you who don't know and granted, this might be a strange way to do it, but I'm bisexual. I decided to give the visual novel genre a chance, a genre I absolutely detest, which is the only thing I'm embarrassed by in this case. I also decided to uncensor the game for the full intended experience. It being a dating sim, Coming Out On Top gives you ample opportunity to romance guys you come across. It's not as shallow as one might expect, thankfully the main cast has enough meat on their bones, so to speak, to not appear stereotypical, but at the same time it can't escape them completely. There's the main storyline and also a mobile app if you want to explore further. One Brofinder date, the game's equivalent of Grindr, ended with both of us being kidnapped, so you can tell the developers have let their imagination run wild. How casual you want to be in your dating is up to you. Despite the game being short or perhaps the player being impatient and horny, ahem, the deeper conversations are there when you look for them.

Repeated activities like tutoring, studying and spending time with your friends are displayed as short text summaries. You can improve your financial status, academic status and your relationship with your friends, but I think it's unlikely you'll run into trouble in any department. I can't speak for the consequences of failing any one of them. It all adds to the game feeling short though. It's not unclear where the real focus of the game lies, it being a dating sim and I think it wouldn't be unfair to call it a sex game, but the censored version is more of a steamy romance novel I guess. The writing can often be very funny and exciting, the gameplay is perfect for the impatient, cos hitting Mouse 1/Space/Enter repeatedly is the entire game. Sadly, it's as fulfilling as a quick-time event, just without the "quick time." Good writing will help you concentrate, as opposed to just skipping to next hot encounter like a sex fiend. Dialogue options make things more interesting.

There isn't a whole lot to choose from when it comes to "gay games" on Steam, never mind variety of options. I imagine they'll remain as small indie games with modest ambitions for a while, until some studio takes a chance on a cool concept. It's great that many games offer options, particularly RPGs, but games with gay protagonists that are story rich, those are hard to come by. Coming Out On Top is definitely worth a try if you swing both ways, one way or maybe you're just curious. It's all good.
